Hello everyone! This is my first post. Im looking into getting the gastric sleeve and I have my first appt with my surgeon tomorrow however Im being forced to do payment plans because my insurance will not cover the surgery. I was wondering how long yall take off work after surgery? I have a desk job so I don't lift anything heavy or anything. I was thinking 1 week off and I should be good. Any thoughts?

I'm taking off for six weeks so that I can devote myself completely to healing, exercising, and following the post-op diet to the letter.

Wow. That's a lot of time. If you have it - I say do it. By the end of week 2 I was going stir crazy and wanted to get back into the swing of things. I was ready for my new normal. You can't do much exercising after. You'll be so weak from lack of eating. My Dr recommended waiting 8 weeks before exercising besides walking. You can always go back early!

Yeah I was thinking 1 week for me because I go stir crazy at home and all I do at work is sit so its nothing too strenuous. I work for my parents so if I have to walk around a lot that wont be a big deal. Im just nervous for my appt because my insurance wont cover it so i have to make payments and Im gonna have to get a second job after surgery to help pay it off.

If you work for your parents that's even better. I mean they wouldn't make you stay if you needed to go home early or whatever. Sounds like a great plan!

I hope they cover your surgery too! If I had to pay out of pocket I probably wouldn't have done it. I was very lucky. Good luck!!!!

I also have a desk job. I had my surgery on a tues & went back to work the following Thursday for 7 hrs & then Friday for 1/2 day & then off sat & sun & back at it full time the following Monday. I must say It was nice easing back into things (going back 2 days part time & then 2 days off). You will get tired easily & have low energy level (at least I did). I have had no complications & couldn't be happier with my decision. I'm 11 weeks post op & have lost 53 lbs from surgery to date.

Best of luck to you!!

I took two weeks and it wasn't quite enough for me, I had to leave in the middle of the afternoon the first couple of days because I was about to fall asleep at my desk. I should have taken three weeks. Everyone is different though!

I was off 6 days. It was do-able with no lifting, but the tiredness is REAL. Your body needs to recover.

12 days out, I took a week off. Day 3 went to the mall and walked around (little shopping) by day 5 I was board out of mind and wanted to go back to work. It all depends on how you feel. Walking gave me tons of energy... I was self pay, I would say after the blood work (pre-opp) two weeks. I didn't have a pre-opp diet at all.

Walking around the mall is a good idea! Its too hot here in Texas to walk outside but Id have to drive to the mall and idk if we are allowed to drive after surgery. So it only took 2 weeks from the time you had your appt to surgery because you were self pay? Im hoping mine is that fast! I have to set up payment plans. My insurance will not cover it at all :/

I was 67 years old, 3 years ago, and walked the mall four days after the sleeve. Fear of the unknown is our worst Enemy. Best of luck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
