Hi everyone,

My surgery date is 10/4 and I'll need to start my pre-op diet on 9/20. My surgeon wants me to do a low carb diet (under 40g per day). What is everyone else needing to do? Is anyone else nervous about this? I've never done a low carb diet (did WW back in the day...never Atkins)... I've researched and know what I need to do, but I'm nervous that I won't lose the weight or shrink my liver as much as they want. If I follow the surgeon's instructions I should be fine right?

I've done a low carb/high protein/high healthy fat diet for my entire six-month insurance-required nutrition program. I've over 90 pounds doing it. I keep my carbs under 20 per day (and under 15 most days). I have whittled from 2000 calories down through 1800 and 1500 to about 1200 calories per day for the past few months. I have cut out alcohol, only because at my calorie-level, I just can't justify using up any calories that won't provide some nutritional value.

It has worked super well for me. My surgery is two weeks from tomorrow, and I am gunning for 100 pounds down when they wheel me into the OR.

Good luck!

@@BetterOffRed If you follow the surgeon's instructions - you should be fine! :-) It's about going into ketosis. Many have different diets - some are all liquids, some have a combination and if you're lucky - some don't have them at all. If you can eat food - just low carb - you should have an easier time (once you get over the carb detox). Good luck!

Wow... that would be so nerve-wracking JamieLogical! It's crazy to me how all the different surgeons have different instructions for us as far as pre-op diets go!

You got an easy one! Mine was just 3 Protein shakes and one green salad with calorie-free dressing per day!

Just wanted to report that I'm doing great on the low carb diet so far! Having lost of eggs, meat, cheeses, lower carb veggies and even altered my morning coffee to have cream & equal in it for only 2 carbs! Day three and I'm down a little over 3 lbs!! Yay! I was so worried that I wouldn't do well on it or see the needed results and all the worry seems to have been for nothing! I'm so excited to have started down my journey and can't wait for the healthier me that doesn't get out of breath going up the stairs!! Had my pre-op appointment with my surgeon yesterday and that went really well. I'm ready for 10/4 to get here now!!

@@BetterOffRed Glad to hear you are doing well. It's awesome you get to eat so much real food on your pre-op. That has got to make it much easier! However, you will still experience the transition into ketosis, which isn't much fun. If you start getting headaches and feeling kind of run down, don't worry. That should only last a couple of days.

Thanks @@JamieLogical! I have been feeling a tad run down, but no headaches yet. I'm trying to stay hydrated, so hopefully that will help! Thanks for the encouragement!!

I check in at 9am tomorrow for my surgery! I didn't have to do any bowel prep or antibiotics, but every surgeon is different. I've seen SO many different regimens talked about on here. Good luck to you!! We'll have to touch base in a week or two to report how we're doing!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
