Do Protein Bars Trigger Your Sweet Tooth?

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone!

I am getting to the point where I will be able to start incorporating Protein bars. I am interested in trying the Quest bars that I have heard so many people rave about. But as convenient as Protein Bars will be, I am concerned that they might trigger my desire for sweets. Has anyone had an issue with this?

Before being sleeved, I had to stay away from "bars" of any kind because they were a gateway to sugar-fueled binges ... but things ARE different now. I am not hungry/having cravings, and I know the Quest bars have very little sugar. I also have a much different view of my health and my responsibility to it, of course, so maybe I am overthinking this. :)

Anyway ... any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

I have not found them to be a trigger food, and I'd have to admit sweets are very appealing to me. I do use them fairly often as a meal, i.e. lunch. It's great to be able to get that 20 gr. of Protein without much thought about meal planning.

Thanks so much to both of you for your responses! Yes, I think they will be very convenient. I'll just tread cautiously and mindfully, and I'll see how it goes! :)

Congrats to all of you on your amazing accomplishments! You are all inspirations to me!

they don't bother *me*, but I can see how they'd be a trigger for some people. Maybe you should start with just buying one or two rather than a whole box - then it it turns out they're a trigger for you, at least you won't have a bunch of them sitting in your house. that could be a disaster!

Yes -- they trigger my sweet tooth specifically and hunger generally. I consider them glorified candy bars and stay away as much as possible.

There is no Protein Bar on earth that can meet your nutritional needs as well as a couple ounces of chopped up chicken can. But you don't see many WLS patients getting as obsessive about eating some chicken as they do their caramel chocolate peanut marshmallow fudge "protein" bars.

No......not at all ....for me ....I always go for the chocolate, double chocolate....they help with the hunger but by the time I am at the end of it I am disgusted haha....I don't find them sweet at all.....or even good....I can only eat them if I am on a road trip or I am in dire need of food till my next meal.....BUT I am not a fan of the shakes either....

I use them rarely when I cannot get at a proper mini meal. I don't think they trigger a sweet tooth for me and I definitely have had a sugar problem in the past.

Now, food porn is a different story. All the ads on tv drive me insane!

I have a major sweet tooth. That was why I was overweight in the first place. Quest Protein bars do not trigger my sweet tooth. They contain very little sugar.

But some Protein Bars are more like a version of a candy bar. They contain significant sugar (and trivial amounts of protein). Important to stay away from these.

I really appreciate everyone's responses! If I try one, I think I'll try a Quest since they are so low in sugar. Seems like they would be least likely to trigger a chemical sugar reaction. And I'll buy just one ... To see how I do.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
