The only thing that worked for me is cutting simple carbs out, and stop eating pastas, breads ect. This is obviously a lot easier post op.

You are pre-op? A piece of grilled/baked meat, and unlimited salad greens/green veggies. A whole bag of salad at the store is like 20 or 40 calories

For me, carbs are an addiction. I know that I can't completely cut them out, but I have reduced them to 12-20 (12-15 most days) for the entirety of my six-month pre-op diet program. (My surgery is September 28.) I have an appointment with my nutritionist for an extra session on Tuesday to discuss the role of carbs as I transition to a new diet post-op.

I have just had to accept that carbs are to me like alcohol is to an alcoholic. Unlike with an alcohol addiction, however, I can't remove carbs from my life completely, but I have to keep them as low as realistically possible if I am going to continue to take off all of my extra weight and keep it off long-term.

Babbs usually chimes in on these carb threads with good info, but until she does, remember that all carbs are not the same. Simple carbs (white flours, sugar, non-diet soda, honey, corn syrups) are the ones to be avoided for the most part. But complex carbs, like those found in whole-grain foods, vegetables and many fruits, can be a part of a pre- and post-op bariatric diet. Dairy and nuts have carbs, but are a staple in my diet...I avoid bread, Pasta and sugar but always have vegetables or fruit after my Protein at every meal.

Cut out grains, sweets, alcohol, and tropical fruits. Have limited quantities of dairy, Beans. legumes, starchy veggies, and other fruit. You should do just fine.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
