Night eating.

It was suggested to me that I take a Protein shake to bed with me. I sip on it during the night----I'm a poor sleeper.

My NUT suggested adding a Protein powder to a drink at night, when I was still on liquids.

I also found a hot chicken broth helpful.

These days if I can't sleep, I have bit of yoghurt (Chobani greek yoghurt is high protein), cottage cheese ..... yes, I like it :)

Or anything healthy that is Protein.< /p>

Still have chicken broth at times.

I always have Protein before I go to bed. It helps me sleep and also helps keep my blood sugar level during the night. I agree with the shakes, and sometimes I will have an egg or yogurt. (BTW, NEVER chew gum! If you swallow it, you can do some damage they tell me, but also it creates air in your stomach/pouch) I also will drink herbal tea with unflavored Protein Powder in it. I have one of those frothers that helps it dissolve and it makes it so smooth and creamy, And helps me sleep as well.

Try to find activities to keep you busy (crafts, emails, reading, exercise, etc.). Also as people pointed out, a Protein shake or lean Protein (like some left over chicken breast) can curb that hunger since it takes longer to digest protein.

You can also try having a drink first to make sure it isn't partially due to thirst.

Don't feel bad, you are far from alone with this, including me.

On point here. Casein Protein takes longer than the whey isolate to be digested, therefore being satiated will last longer. In terms of "ideal" protein ( for those who are ok with milk products) casein is second only to 100% whey-isolate. It's a good choice.

I am intrigued what casein products are you using? I have heard of it as a milk Protein but not familiar with it at stores like whey or pea protein.

It is micellar casein, and also has BCAA's in it (branched chain amino acids). BCAA's help with several things, including muscle repair, muscle recovery, and fatigue from exercise. They supply you with the amino acids (building blocks of proteins) you are not manufacturing in your body and must get from exogenous (outside) sources. Is it necessary to take BCAA's? Not necessarily.

Almonds

Peanuts

Wheat germ

Oats

Pinto Beans

Chick peas

Lentils

Brown rice

Corn

Beef

Salmon

chicken

eggs

Milk

Hummus

Soy Protein

Lamb

Seaweed

cheese

Cottage cheese

Mushrooms

Carrots

Some are plant-based, some dairy, some meat

Bariatric patients have a hard time getting enough of any one nutrient in per meal/or per day.

The target for BCAA's is 3G per meal- but there are three different BCAA's we need -leucine, isoleucine, and valine. And not all come from the same sources.

So, if you are working out, having your whey Protein shake mixed with BCAA's right after your workout is ideal because the whey is readily absorbed and targets your muscles, and the BCAA's go right with them- and recovery is easier.

I use Syntrax matrix. It has a combination of whey and casein. The Peanut Butter cookie is to die for!

I also make mug cakes from it--recipe from this board. A scoop with about .25 tsp of baking powder and just a touch of liquid--milk or Water or coffee creamer-- to make an almost paste like consistency. Microwave about 40 seconds. Yum!
