Surgery on Monday!

Recommended Posts

Pretty excited, but also really nervous. I'm doing a lot of going back and forth in my head. I'm going through with it no matter what, but of course there's a little devil on my shoulder.

Today I started the pre-op diet, which is not liquid only. I can't get full, so I keep thinking about food, but I'm sticking to it.

I had to stop birth control for the surgery, and I had my period two weeks ago. I got it back again since hormones are out of whack and am bummed I'll have it through surgery. Any post op people have any advice?

Everyone keep your fingers crossed it all goes well!

I was sleeved August 10 and had my period at that time. They may give you some mesh underwear to wear with a pad during surgery. And if they give you heparin injections you may bleed a little more than normal.

I'm home from surgery. Worst part was waking up and that awful pain on my chest + nausea. Thankful for awesome nurses and that magic button of drugs I could hit. They found a hiatal hernia while in there and fixed it at the same time, so I have two extra incisions and a little more pain than usual.

I slept a LOT. And when I got home yesterday, I took a shower and slept from 4 pm until 4 this morning and had a little nap today. Took a lot out of me.

Day one I couldn't even feel the incisions, just the nausea and chest pain. Come day 2 and having to get up to use the bathroom was painful and still is.

My period was just about to end going in to surgery, but now the blood is extremely red and heavy. I called the surgeon to be sure that's okay but she reminded me my hormones are out of whack and my body just had a serious trauma. I will be fine. These incisions suck though. I can't even bend over to wipe. Sorry for the TMI.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
