Just had my surgery on Wed. Want to tell you 'bout it

Recommended Posts

I guess I should now be over on the POST gb forum, but I wanted to post this here so that people about to get the surgery know what it might be like.

I was sooo nervous and sooo emotional! I had no IDEA how much of a hold, food has over me! Since I use it to cope, I've been crying a lot lately. I really need to get some psychiatric help so that I can find a healthy outlet for my emotions instead of using food.< /p>

Other than that, my surgery went amazing! I was in there for 3 and a half hours. It was done laparoscopically and it took so long because I have a LOT of scar tissue in that area from previous surgeries.

I woke up in hardly any pain and never really HAD any pain at all, except for the gas. The gas is what hurt the most. So on the second day, I was up and walking the halls, doing about 4 trips around the two nursing stations and other rooms in the center in an hour.

I was released yesterday and love being home! Things are just like they used to be, except I can't pick up and hold my cat, he's too heavy. I can't vacuum and do most of the chores I used to do but I can wash the dishes and keep the kitchen looking nice. Also, I have to be up and walking every hour too! I only walk for about 5 minutes because I'm not used to exercise and it hurts my legs and back really bad. But I will build that up to 10 minutes in no time.

So all in all, it went great! Hardly any pain and no more hunger! Oh, although! When I see some commercials (and I cannot BELIEVE how many commercials there are for food!) it makes me REALLY desire them! Even though I'm not hungry, I STILL want them. And that's what scares me and what I need counseling for.

I'm still on the clear liquid diet for another 4 days and then go to full liquids which I can't wait for! Too much sweet stuff (drinks, popsicles and jello) on the clear liquid diet. lol

So I hope this has helped and was good to read for some of you! Good luck!

Thanx for sharing your experience. I'm having my surgery on the 28th. In on my 2nd day of liquids. I'm avoiding tv unless it's on the dvr where I can skip commercials. So nervous. Your info really helps to calm me. Thank you.

Oh, also, emuts... what TanishaP said is so true, it gets even better the further you go out from surgery! Like how I was talking about the foods in the commercials and how you're going to DVR your shows? Well at the time of writing that, yeah, it was a bitch seeing them, but NOW... they have NO effect on me! Now, watching those commercials for crazy bread from Little Ceasars, dripping with cheese and butter is as if I'm watching a commercial for Ace Hardware store! lol! It does nothing for me! So don't be like me and freak out wondering why you're still desiring all those foods when you're watching tv in the hospital! =)

Alright! Congrats! Not too much longer now! And thanks! Yeah, the only thing I'm worried about now is that I don't seem to be losing weight very fast. My surgery was on the 7th and I've only lost 12 pounds

I am on my liquid diet and already the food comm. Get to me. Even stuff I'd never eat looks great. It does hit me how attached I am to my food. I wouldn't say I use it as a coping tool. Just really enjoy food. I will enjoy my health even more though. I'm so ready.

Right? Well, I didn't really realise how much I used it as a coping mechanism until I didn't have it anymore. Like you said, I want what I normally wouldn't even eat! Not good! But I love your mindset! You're so right!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
