Just had my surgery on Wed. Want to tell you 'bout it

Recommended Posts

I guess I should now be over on the POST gb forum, but I wanted to post this here so that people about to get the surgery know what it might be like.
I was sooo nervous and sooo emotional! I had no IDEA how much of a hold, food has over me! Since I use it to cope, I've been crying a lot lately. I really need to get some psychiatric help so that I can find a healthy outlet for my emotions instead of using food.< br />Other than that, my surgery went amazing! I was in there for 3 and a half hours. It was done laparoscopically and it took so long because I have a LOT of scar tissue in that area from previous surgeries.
I woke up in hardly any pain and never really HAD any pain at all, except for the gas. The gas is what hurt the most. So on the second day, I was up and walking the halls, doing about 4 trips around the two nursing stations and other rooms in the center in an hour.
I was released yesterday and love being home! Things are just like they used to be, except I can't pick up and hold my cat, he's too heavy. I can't vacuum and do most of the chores I used to do but I can wash the dishes and keep the kitchen looking nice. Also, I have to be up and walking every hour too! I only walk for about 5 minutes because I'm not used to exercise and it hurts my legs and back really bad. But I will build that up to 10 minutes in no time.
So all in all, it went great! Hardly any pain and no more hunger! Oh, although! When I see some commercials (and I cannot BELIEVE how many commercials there are for food!) it makes me REALLY desire them! Even though I'm not hungry, I STILL want them. And that's what scares me and what I need counseling for.

I'm still on the clear liquid diet for another 4 days and then go to full liquids which I can't wait for! Too much sweet stuff (drinks, popsicles and jello) on the clear liquid diet. lol

So I hope this has helped and was good to read for some of you! Good luck!

Congrats! Your surgery experience sounded very much like my own. The surgery went well, no complications, minimal pain. It's common too that you feel very emotional the first month or so. All of this will fade in time as you get stronger and the weight starts dropping.

The food commercials bothered me too initially. But honestly now at 14 months out, they kind of repulse me. The cravings are pretty much nonexistent now too. The longer out you get the better you will feel. Use this golden time of rapid weight to your benefit. The sooner you adopt a healthy food and exercise lifestyle the easier it will be. Rest and allow your body the time it needs. Stay as hydrated as you can too.

Congrats again on making it to the other side. You're gonna love it!

Right? I didn't even care about them before! Oh, there might have been one or two, like a Golden Corral or Red Lobster one (btw, I would never eat at Golden Corral, very unhygienic there), but it seems like NOW, ALL the commercials are making me drool. There was a commercial that wasn't even ABOUT food, I think it was about football, but someone was eating nachos and I was like, UGHHHHHH! lol

Oh, sweet! Nice to know that I've helped someone! Yeah, if I could go back in time, I would have been more excited and waaaay less nervous. I was actually crying when they were all bustling around me putting in IVs, putting blankets on me, hair net, etc! Yeah, if I could go back, I would just be smiling from ear to ear! lol!

You helped immensely! I have no idea what to expect and also don't know what to plan on, food wise, the first part of my recovery. But I do attend another nutrition class a few weeks before my surgery.

You posting was wonderful...thanks so much...

Yay! I'm glad I could help! Just research, research, research! Don't be like some of these people who go in to get the surgery done and don't even know they're supposed to sip their liquids, or don't know what foods to stay away from etc. Don't be like them.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
