Great morning all!

I had my VSG this past Tuesday. I feel great. I am having a bit of a hard time getting all the Water and Protein in but swallowing is getting easier so I'm sure I will be fine. I wanted to share with you all what seems to be my biggest struggle so far. I have a large family. 5 children and their dad. I came home from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon and since I purchased food they could prepare themselves I didn't have to even go into the kitchen. I planned to prepare meals ahead of time but they didn't want to reheat food. Yesterday, my daughter asked for real food. I wasn't sore or tired at all so I proceeded to prepare dinner for everyone. I made baked ziti with tossed salad and garlic bread. They DEVOURED it. I sat in the family room and watched tv while they ate. After my son cleaned the kitchen and they all found a spot to get cozy and said thanks so much mom. That was delicious! I felt so disconnected from them. We typically eat dinner together and I hadn't realized how important this was to me until I wasn't able to. Is anyone else struggling with this? What do you do while your family is enjoying a meal? I think I may plan to take a walk after dinner is served. Is it hard to cook something for your family and enjoy your Water and Protein? Also, is it me or does it seem like food commercials are on twice as much and look twice as good? I've been looking for new vsg friendly recipes to try when I am able to eat. Please tell me I'm not the only one!!

Hey there! It is a challenge to miss out on time as well as food!

For me, I still eat with family just eat what my acceptable meal is and when possible have my meal be the same/ish. For instance with roasted vegetables and chicken, I will measure my dinner and then family eat theirs with maybe bread or other side that I don't eat.

It makes it easier for me to be sitting at table if meal same, but actually I have done with completely different food. I like being there more than I feel deprived of what or what amount they are eating.

Give it a try when you are ready, you may surprise yourself and feel better about being there!

Everything you're going through is temporary. As soon as you're healed up and progressing stages of food, you will, in fact, be able to sit down and have a meal with them. Just start cooking more bariatric friendly meals that you can also partake in. Concentrate on Protein and veggies, let them have the starch.

Yes, at first we do feel more like freaks than normal people. But you'll be surprised how soon you'll get into the groove and find your new normal. It doesn't take long at all.

Always remember: This too shall pass.

You're so right. I only have about 10 more days of this. That first day was a little more difficult than I expected. "This too shall pass" My Dad used to tell me that all the time!! Thanks so much!!

You're right. I'm sure it will be easier when I get to that stage. I guess it just hit me harder than I expected it to. 10 more days to go. I'm sure I can do it!! Thanks!!

I know it's tough. I started my pre op liquid diet August 1 and was sleeved on the 22 and through this whole process I have sat at the table with my family during meals including 3 birthdays, my block party, and a dinner party I attended 3 days after getting out of the hospital.

I find its better for me to sit with them and participate in the family time than to be removed from them. It's not as hard as it seems.

I would give it a shot - bring what ever you are eating or drinking to the table and be part of the conversation.

I hope it works for you - it's tough sometimes but I feel like being disconnected might be worse

You would be amazed at how easy it is to sit there with even just Protein broth!

Best of luck!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
