Weight gain weight 10 days post op?

Recommended Posts

Hi there! I am trying not to freak out, but I stepped on the scale yesterday, and I was the same weight as the day before (which was 10 days post op) but now today, I am up a pound! I did look and dos not have enough calories 3 days ago, and I am a woman who is at the middle of her cycle, but mentally, that is pretty devastating go see! I also gained 10 pounds immediately post op, so I am truly only down 6 pounds from when I went in for surgery! I am doing 70g+ of Protein and 800 calories a day...has anyone else experienced this? Thoughts?

Definitely Water gain. I am experiencing it too. /cry Impossible to gain that kind of weight on only 800 calories a day.

It's just your body going into starvation mode and glycogen storage. No worries (although I know it's hard not to).

This surgery causes our bodies to become whacky sometimes.

I am 10 days post-op today as well. I have lost weight each day since my surgery, except for 2 days. On both of those days, the day before I did not get in enough Protein or calories. I have read that if you aren't getting in what you need, your body will go into starvation mode and will hold on to its weight instead of losing. I am still not getting in my doctors recommended 80 grams of Protein per day because I just can't drink that many Protein shakes, but I am trying. I can definitely tell the difference in my weight loss though if I don't get much protein in. It sounds like you are doing really well on your protein though. I'm wondering if maybe you are getting in too many carbs? Maybe you need to increase your calories to 1,000 or even 1,200? I am not sure I have a good answer for you, but I know this surgery does wreak havoc on our body and hormones, so I am hoping everything will straighten out for you soon. Best of luck!

Uh, there's NO WAY anyone can get in that many calories 10 days post op. It's not physically possible.

It's not anything she's doing wrong. The calorie deficit alone causes the starvation mode. It's also going to cause a stall here pretty soon. Happens to everyone!

Are you exercising too? I'm walking and riding my bike a couple of times a day. even when I had little or no energy during the liquid post op phase. Sounds Like you are getting plenty of Protein. I would discus with your Nut what you are eating. Good Luck

I certainly can't take in that many calories either, but I also can't get in the 800 that she mentioned she's getting in. 200 more wouldn't be a huge jump for her, could be done with a Protein Shake. Just throwing it out there as a thought to help. Not trying to hurt anyone.

You're not doing anything wrong @sleeved83016. It's only been a couple of days. Any weight loss or gain you see from one day to the next is going to be Fluid, not fat. Don't stress. A decent wee will probably see that weight drop straight off again.

Best thing to do is only weigh once a week. You will continue to beat yourself up if you weigh every day. I know we are all excited and want to jump on the scale....my best advice don't. My surgery was 8/24/16 and I last weighed at post op appt at doctors office. Will weigh Sunday I think. My doctor told me not to weigh for at least two weeks. Taking his advice.

I had lots of Water gain in the beginning due to the IV fluids, it finally all dropped off in the past few days. I went in for my first post op, and I lost an additional 11 lbs.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
