Staple Line Pian

Recommended Posts

I am 2.5 weeks post op and having staple line pain, which began last night. It feels similar to a sore muscle kind of pain. I am on a stage 3 diet and was told I could have toasted whole wheat bread. I tried that last night, and worried I may have food hung up in my line. Hoping my new stomach will eventually digest it. I'm going back on full liquids today, longer if needed. Has anyone else experienced this and what did you do about it?

No I didn't have that issue. However, 2.5 weeks sounds pretty early to be trying bread.....I think going back to liquids is a good idea and if the pain continues calls your doctor......

I don't know that it's possible to feel pain in the staple line. Wouldn't we all feel that pain following being cut and stapled?

I guess unless you've experienced it, you wouldn't know what I'm talking about. It's not a pain, such as an incision, it's more of a sore muscle feel. I'm assuming I have food stuck in my line and asking others that have experienced similar, to offer their tips for releasing it. Each of our surgeons puts us on different programs. Mine seems to have rushed my food stages in comparison to what I've read others are doing at the same post op or farther out.

If it hurts, don't do it. You're absolutely correct to just go back to liquids for a few more days and try again later. Pain when eating or drinking is pretty much an indicator that whatever you're doing is either to fast or too soon. This is all just trial and error at first!

I'm 5 weeks post op and still haven't tried bread so I can't say for sure but I do know that our stomachs don't have pain receptors so it probably isn't a staple line pain as much as it is just having something stuck. I would do what others suggested and if you are still having pain, call your surgeon. You are still at risk for leaks 2.5 weeks out so definitely not something you want to take a risk on by waiting.
