Gastric Sleeve vs. Gastric Bypass?

Recommended Posts

Before my sleeve surgery I read several articles/recommendations saying the amount of weight lost would be almost comparable to the bypass surgery. Over the past few days I've seen several things reporting patients don't lose as much weight with the sleeve surgery. While I know each individual is different does anyone know how the sleeve and the bypass compare as far as actual weight lost?

We had the sleeve. I have several friends and family do the bypass. Some were so successful with the bypass, some gained it all back by eating mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. I have gained 20 lbs I lost with the sleeve. I believe it is up to the individual and their eating habits. I see a lot of bypass patients here who end up with the sleeve. I hope you really research this, because we all have such different experiences. Personally my husband and I attended WL seminars 15 years, and until the sleeve seminar, we felt everything else was not right for us. So thankful and happy. My husband has lost 100 lbs! Life changing!

Here is a link to an article about a very recent study published in JAMA Surgery:

http://corporate.dukemedicine.org/news_and_publications/news_office/news/gastric-bypass-is-better-than-other-procedures-for-sustainable-weight-loss

Upshot: any kind of weight loss surgery has FAR better results than no surgery at all.

This study looked at one year and four years after surgery. At the four year mark, gastric bypass patients had lost 27.5% of their total body weight while sleeve patients lost 17.8 percent of their total body weight. Lap band patients lost 10.6% of their total body weight.

Obese patients who did not have surgery but tried to lose weight with diet and exercise lost 1.1% of their total body weight.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
