How Long Before You Regained Your Energy?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I had my RNY on 8/8, and at a month out, I'm finding that pretty much every other day, all I want to do is sit/lie down. I try and push myself to be a bit more active, but it seems like in the days that follow, I end up paying dearly for it. I tried going back to work after four weeks and ended having to go home after half a day. My surgeon is granting me next week off so that I can rest; it's depressing. I just wish I knew when if be back to my "normal" again.

Any thoughts/contributions?

Thanks for everything!

I regained most of my energy (I am 60) around week 6. My full energy did not come back until a couple months later. This was even though I followed my surgeon's and NUT's plan to a T and got exercise every day. My surgeon told me that some people's body just takes a little longer to 'wake up' after anesthesia. Anyway, my energy did eventually come back and at about a year out, I am able to exercise 1 1/2 - 2 hours a day without wearing out.

If you are concerned, you can always call your office and ask; I am sure they would be glad to hear from you - or bring it up at your 6 week check up (that is what I did). Take care of yourself and good luck in your journey!!

I would say between weeks six and eight, I had regained full energy. It is imperative that you are getting in all of the required Protein right now, as your body is healing....good luck!

Surgery was on 8/3. I was back to work for half days 8/8. The first days were rough. Naps in the afternoons. I lost a lot of weight the first week (10+) but it was tough. Energy really returned the following week. For me, energy returned 2.5 weeks after surgery. Thank God! School started the following week (and my University classes started too).

By 10 days out I was rearing to go- but had to wait for surgeon to give me the go- ahead to lift. Until then was walking like crazy, running errands, etc.

At the 4 week mark, when I could lift, I proceeded to rip out all the landscaping in front of my house, replant it all, and my husband and I built a new front porch. Course, I was on a deadline- oldest sons HS grad was in May, and along with it, a huge party for 150 people. Lol.

I found that the more I did, the more energy I had.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
