For those worried about excess skin...

Recommended Posts

I posted this same topic over on the general boards, but figured you guys might benefit, too! :)

Hi guys! I wanted to put some minds at ease about excess skin. It truly depends on your body type, age, exercise level, Water intake...and about 20 other variables. That being said, I think most of the after photos people see show huge excess amounts of skin, and thankfully, it isn't that way for EVERYONE.

I drink tons of Water, exercise a lot, and in general, have good skin. I also had rather good weight distribution - no one part of me was excessively larger than all the other parts (luckily!).

I had VSG almost 2 years ago - I'll be 22 months out on the 20th of this month. I'm 28 years old, my high weight was 330 lbs, surgery weight was 323 lbs, and current weight is 150 lbs - putting me at 173 lbs lost.

I know so many people decide WLS isn't for them, for fear of excess skin. Don't let that sway you - it might not be as bad as you think!! :)

You have done amazing! Great job. Your skin isn't bad AT ALL.

I'm kind of an old broad, but I exercised to minimize it the best I could. My only real problem area is my tummy, also. But heck, Spanx and pulling my pants up over it, I hide it pretty well ;) I did have a plastics consult, but chose to pass for now. I may change my mind down the road.

How long were you overweight? I know my doctor said that can play a factor as well. But either way you look fantastic. Congratulations

Thank you!!! I'm terrified of saggy skin! I've had 4 kids within 6 years and I'm overweight, obviously, and I'm trying to get all the financials figured out, hopefully tomorrow, for surgery. I'm terrible at drinking Water so I know that will need to be a main focus for me and I want to start exercising asap after my surgery, but I don't know how long I have to wait, to hopefully lessen the saggy skin... I'm 31, 5'3" and currently at my highest weight of 260. My lowest weight that I can remember was 175..so I've never been thin... But after my first son my skin bounced back really well minus my stretch marks and I grabbed 45lbs with him... So that makes me hopeful...

You look great!!

Was there a time during the middle of losing that you had some sagging!

I'm just wondering because right now, I'm 79 lbs down and worry about arms, thighs and tummy. It seems to be tightening back up some but I wonder if this is as good as it's likely to get or if there is improvement after maintenance.

Great topic- great post

At just shy of 50, I gained rapidly and maintained obesity for almost 9 years.

Three full term pregnancies a decade before- not one stretch mark, only gained 21-25 lbs per pregnancy. Body bounced back quickly.

Prednisone long term makes your skin lose elasticity and the stretch marks are horrid!!

Thought for sure I'd have a huge apron of skin. Nope. Lucky I guess. Still have 40 to go, but at my 4 mos post op, surgeon didn't think I'd end up too bad.

Arms never gained much, so just a little wiggle under the pits- weights and time should help.

Thank you!

Awesome work on your part'

As a guy! This is my biggest fear and honestly the main reason I waited so long to do it. I have always been a bigger guy. At 18 I was 230lbs with an 18%body fat. But pre surgery I was up to 415lbs.

Day of surgery I was down to 391. I'm 6 days post op and deff loving the loss so far but I'm so sick of Protein shakes it's not funny.

Deff gonna hit the gym as soon as I can I know that helps. And I hope to keep as much muscle as I can.

If you have your gym membership already as soon as you feel like you can get out, then by all means go! You can't lift or do resistance work yet, but you can get on an elliptical, treadmill and recumbent bike.

Begin your commitment to it ASAP. Don't overdo it!!! Be careful listen to your body but start the habit ASAP. By the time you're cleared to lift things again, you will already be in the groove!

Welcome to the other side!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
