First meeting w/Surgeon tomorrow!

Recommended Posts

I'm excited and nervous all at the same time.

I am going to meet the man that will forever change my life! Hubby will be going with me to listen and learn. He is afraid to ask the Dr. Questions so today, I am having him write them out with me. (He's afraid the tone in his voice will piss off the Dr.)

Not real sure what to expect tomorrow. Really hoping that I will get my schedule of tests to be done and meet with the NUT. I don't think I was this excited to meet a celebrity! Today is going to go by soooo slowly...

Good luck! Just one more sleep .....

Yes, great idea to have a list of questions written down, so nothing gets forgotten.

After my first appointment, I had to have a full blood panel done, make apt with NUT, bariatric psychologist and Endo.

Plus I was scheduled for Gastroscopy.

Few hoops to jump through, but they were all worth it.

So, it begins. How exciting!

Good idea to write down your and hubby's questions. Remember your visit is YOUR time with the surgeon. Be sure all of your questions are answered. Do not get rushed.

Be sure to post and let us know how your first consult with the surgeon went.

No, the swallow test is usually Barium Meal, to ensure there are no leaks post op.

Gastroscopy is done under anaesthetic, where they put an endoscope through your oesophagus and right down your stomach to check if everything is OK, or whether there is a hernia, and just to have a good look at your stomach before surgery.

It is a day procedure, and it doesn't hurt.

@keakow57 thanks for the heads up. I knew there was a test with a camera... I just had no idea what it's called. (I'm not very smart when it comes to stuff like that)

My first appointment is today too in just a few hours, I feel like it's a formality as I've been reading about the surgery for six months, I don't think I have any questions left. Never the less I am excited to finally be getting started, I have no medically supervised weight loss required so I shoul have surgery end of next month or early November if all goes well.

No my insurance just doesn't require it. They only require that I have a bmi of at least 35 with at least one co- morniditity. I was super relieved as I just didn't know if I could handle failing another diet before surgery. On the plus side I just got back from my appointment and I loved the doctor and he agreed with me that the sleeve was the best surgery for me and said I could have surgery by the end of next month. I'm so happy now.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
