Wish I knew ahead of time what my tummy likes - wasting food and money

Recommended Posts

I'm a month out. I was cleared for soft and mushie foods from day 12. I'm not fond of Greek yogurt or cottage cheese. I guess I'm picky. I'm not cleared for vegetables or fruit yet. I can't wait so I can make the foods a little more tasty.

I've been okay with eggs, cheese, tuna, chicken/turkey. This week I tried shrimp and deli roast beef. Neither worked for me. I just couldn't chew enough to get it liquid enough, nor did I enjoy the task - so quickly gave it to my dog (who I think is gaining weight). I had some liverwurst, which was easy to eat and delicious. Although my NUT said Okay, just not to eat too much because of the high fat.

I'm not a big fish eater, but I think I have to take the plunge and try some recipes since my go to shell fish isn't working.

I'm bored and I'm very hungry at times. I'm meeting my protein/water goals, supplementing Premier Protein, although some days I gag at the thought of drinking another one. I do like the ricotta bake, but add a little lite Tomato sauce to it.

If I could do more than one yolk a day, I'd be happy, but I stick to the plan. Since 6 weeks including my 2 week pre surgery diet, I'm down 25 pounds.

I also live in Florida, and our favorite meals are blackened or grilled Mahi, Grouper, and other salt Water yummy fish. Old Bay seasoning is my favorite. It takes a very few minutes to sauté the fish. Scallops are soft also. I really enjoy making a fresh crabmeat salad, with Avocado. Pinterest has so many versions. I do not like deli meats at all without bread! I have a love for spicy Mexican food, so at your stage I enjoyed a couple teaspoons refried Beans topped with salsa. There are so many options for food, that I found it fun to create. Good luck!

Well congrats on your progress so far! You're doing superb!!! I'm sure people will offer great advice about what to do. Personally I'm a simple gal. I stick with simple foods. I eat the things I like until I get tired of it and I keep my eyes open for something else I might like when I get tired of the thing I'm liking at the moment.

At 6 weeks I was cleared for regular foods including fruits and veggies. And even before that I was enjoying soft fruits and veggies if I had to stuff em in a blender!! Anyways what works for me is to figure out what I need to hit my daily goals. Shop according to those needs incorporating a few new things to try here and there. New thing for me this week-- Chia Seed pudding bowls. Not bad. So I have had it occasionally as a snack or quick Breakfast item.

By week 7-- I surrendered. I'd waited for what seems like an eternity to eat "regular food" and now that I could eat it-- I would get all excited only to realize I could only eat a few bites. So I stopped thinking about food as much. I focused more on the process and getting in the Protein I needed. What foods can get me to my goal. The cheese stick, the nuts, the shake, the chicken breast--if its going to get me to my goal then thats it. On top of managing The fluids, the Vitamins, the activity. And might I add that was enough to juggle. I find I don't have room for anything else. I find I can barely get those things down in a day and If food X makes me gag at the thought--I put it on rest for a while and then bring in food Z.

You're still adjusting so give it time. Even at 6 and 7 weeks I still oscillated between liquids and mushies (still do!) eating with a purpose goes a long way when you can only eat a little. I'm only 2 1/2 months post op but I've been there too and figured out how to get around it after bumping my head a few times. Hang in there and keep up the good work!

Here is a warning........thinking about food and looking at food (Food Porn), will cause you to have serious head hunger.

It is likely you are actually dealing with that given the hunger hormone was severed when they removed 90% of your stomach.

In the early stages it is best to think about just meeting your Protein goals and it sounds like you are able to eat eggs, turkey, chicken.....stuff like that.

I know I really struggled with Greek yogurt as well but found flavors that I could tolerate an slowly I actually began to like Greek yogurt. I like the Chobani flips. Same thing with cottage cheese which is a great Protein source.

I also look for ways to eat ricotta cheese and I now LOVE it. It is one of my favorites. It's even better when you can have fruit which I was allowed at 4 weeks. A grilled peach with a large spoon full of Splenda sweetened or natural honey is absolutely delicious. I use a small amount of honey because I am alergic to artificial sweeteners.

Remember at the soft food stage you can eat anything that you can cook in a crock pot. The recipes are endless!

My favorite was chicken cooked in a crock pot with diet root beer. I know. it sounds yucky, but it tastes wonderful----honest. :)

just make sure what you're eating is super most and smooth---even if you have to put it into a blender for a second or two after crocking it.

Think outside the box when crocking it. There are also dozens and dozens of recipes on line.

If something isn't tolerated at the moment, don't give up on it---just try it again in a couple of weeks.

Good luck and happy experimenting!!!

@@Valentina gave the best advice, try something again in a few weeks if you find you can't tolerate it right now.

I could NOT do scrambled or hard boiled eggs. The food was soft enough, but it caused a lot of pain in my stomach, cramping/gas like. It hurt so much I was scared to try them again. But 4 weeks later and I was mixing eggs in with some hashbrowns, meat, and veggies.

I have never been able to stand greek yogurt. The one and new exception is the Dannon Light & Fit Greek yogurt. It's actually really good.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
