Is it normal to get cold feet?

Recommended Posts

I started my sleeve research over a year ago and never thought it would be possible For a few months I talked to people about it but then found out that my insurance wouldn't cover it and just kind of gave up.

I found out recently that I've developed some mild health problems due to my weight and after a long talk with my husband we decided to spend the money for the sleeve. I had my first appt in early August and since then have been doing the necessary blood tests/doctors appointments, etc.

Well as of today they officially have all my paperwork. I go in for the nutrition class on Wednesday and then the following Tuesday I have my pre op consultation with the surgeon. She said we're likely looking at a surgery date of early October.

All the sudden I find myself terrified and wondering if this is too "extreme". I have struggled with my weight for years. It makes me depressed and now it's affecting my health, but I'm so scared that I'll do it and something will go wrong, or I'll hate it and not be able to reverse it. It just feels so REAL all of the sudden! I know that I can lose this weight on my own, because I've done it about 10 times before. So I know that I'll end up right back here in a year still being unhealthy and depressed and possibly even heavier like I am with almost every regain.

I know that everyone is different and no one can make this choice for me, I'm just wondering if others went through the same emotions?

Several others have voiced very similar fears. Just keep reminding yourself that this is going to help you to be healthy! It's not going to be easy but I truly believe it will all be worth it! Stay strong!

Thanks! I'm really hoping that it's just temporary. I've wanted this for over a year now and now that it's happening maybe I just feel overwhelmed.

Statistics show that WLS patients have a much higher rate of success in weight loss and maintenance than those that diet and exercise without surgery. I'm self pay too. I see it as an investment in my health - the best investment anyone can make.

What you're feeling is completely normal. I was so nervous I tried to cancel my surgery 5 days out. The NUT calmed my fears and I went through with it. Thank goodness I did!! Soooo happy to be sleeved! I, too, was self pay. It's an investment in healthy longevity!

I'm so glad to hear that there are others who felt this way.

Hoping to hear more stories!

Definitely normal. And, I would think that if you combined normal apprehension about a surgery with the increased $$ out of pocket (as compared to completely covered by insurance), that second guessing would increase.

As others have said, you invested a lot of time to make a big decision. Until you see the fruits of that decision, you are going to question yourself. I had the same thoughts, and I just did not let that unknown or fear change my mind from what I knew was rationally needed for my health.

I'm being sleeved next week and I'm feeling the same. Have moments if WTF am I doing? Cutting away a perfectly healthy stomach, one that has never caused me problems despite a lifetime of abuse! Then I get excited about the changes ahead. Having read feedback here I think it is a decision we will not regret. X

I backed out of the first surgery date about a year ago and tried to do it my own. That wasn't very smart since I did lose some weight I still ended up on more medication. The best thing I did was a year later when I rescheduled and I was still able to get the surgery. Life savor and an eye opener for sure !!!!

Totally normal to feel nervous about a major life change. I felt the same way about a month prior to surgery.

Everything has gone smoothly for me so far! No regrets.

My surgery is Monday, 9/12. I have the same reservations you're having. However, I'm on 4 meds for my blood pressure and there is no way I'm going to miss this opportunity! Hang in there ????

I was so happy when the surgeon told him the date of 8th of Oct because I feared it would take forever but then about 20min later reality hit home and I had the same thought. My husband looked at me and said I had gone all white and looked terrified.

I think it's good to realise how huge a lifestyle change this is going to be, give it thought and look at the pros and cons.

I live in Australua so our health insurance is very different here, but I think it's awesome that you spoke to your husband and you've made the choice to seek help!

Good luck xx

For me, it didn't get real until my surgery was scheduled and I got my actual date. I remember asking my fiancé if he'd be disappointed if I decided not to have the surgery (which of course the answer was no). I considered backing out of it for about a second until I remembered all the times that I've lost weight on my own, only to gain it back (plus more) over and over again. I'm now 4 weeks post op and I've never regretting it. I'm hopeful about the future and it feels good to know that I have this tool to help me succeed.

I also had those feelings before my surgery. I went back and read something I wrote when I started down this path that spoke of all the reasons I wanted this surgery and that got me through those minutes of doubt.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
