Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

Recommended Posts

I had that moment of realization this afternoon that I'm only 2.5 weeks away from my surgery. I went from being extremely excited to now being nervous as hell!

Most of the nerves revolve around the surgery itself. I've never have had a operation before.

I'm always the one that likes to have control of a situation and with this surgery, you are putting your life in the control of the hospital staff. I have complete confidence in the Dr. And the team/program but the unknowns are what making me nervous as hell!

I'm sure these are normal pre-op jitters. How did you all overcome these?

How did I overcome the jitters?

Let's see........unfortunately this wasn't my first surgery. I've had a couple knee repairs, ankle repair and two prior patch jobs on abdominal hernias. All were the results of playing hard and having fun.

The sleeve surgery, however, was a preemptive attempt to hopefully avoid or severely delay other pending surgeries....spine, knee replacements, etc. Thus, I was looking forward to the event and hoping for quick results.

The sleeve surgery was a joke. It was a complete breeze.....very, very easy and the recovery effort was minimal. Spent some time catching up on great movies and tv shows and walking, walking and more walking.

I have learned one thing that helps me a great deal with surgeries. It is something that I arrange with my surgeon each and every time. I highly recommend >>>>>> Ask them for a prescription for some pre-op anti-jitter meds like Valium for use on the night before and the morning of your surgery. It'll keep you calm as you march happily through those last hours just before your surgery.

Enjoy the process.....there will be plenty of humorous moments if you look for them.

My sleeve surgery is the absolute best decision I've made.....perhaps ever.

I am 6 days post a revision surgery (band to sleeve). Although it's normal to feel nervous, knowing that it doesn't really help get over that feeling. What helped me is, where it is new to you and me, these doctors have done zillions of sleeve surgeries. It's routine. It's mundane. It's ordinary. You'll be just fine. The post op isn't too bad either. Only hard day was the first for me. I was in at 7 am, out by 4 pm. in the same day. Excited for you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
