Does VSG typically increase heartburn

I had it bad before surgery, but I haven't had it at all since I got my sleeve. Watch eating real spices food. You should be fine. I had surgery July 6th.

Before surgery i would get heartburn every once in a while.... now it is full force no matter what i eat. I had a hernia repair during surgery and it still did not help. I think it got worse. My doctor has gave me some acid pills called dexilant . I really hope this gets better cuz it is irritating and very uncomfortable

Dexilant was the only PPI that provided me any relief although it never took my reflux completely away. My insurance stopped covering it and the prescription was too expensive without insurance, about $400 a month so I had to stop taking it.

I've been approved for VSG, but I'm worried about heartburn. I'm currently not diagnosed with GERD but I do experience heartburn on a regular basis. What is everyone's experience with heartburn and VSG?

Just had my consult,a few weeks,ago and i was,also worried,about,that,as,I have gerd and have had it for years. The surgeon said, " about 1/3 of sleeved patients will e,perience heartburn after the sleeve". He,also,said, " what he is,seeing more and more now is,that 4 to 5 years out,sleeve patients,arw getting heartburn really bad and getting a revision to rny.

I had frequent heartburn prior to my sleeve and no heartburn since. BUT...I did have a hiatal hernia repaired during my sleeve procedure. My surgeon told me I may not experience heartburn...so far, so good!

I am 5 months out and had terrible heartburn before surgery, a NONE after. I was tested for the H Pyloria bacteria before surgery. It's a simple blow in a bag deal. If you have it then they should be able to treat it with antibiotics. I did not have it. My surgeon said there also might be a hernia and that he would repair it if he found one. No hernia either. I did have "trigger" foods prior to surgery, such as chocolate, baked goods (especially chocolate chip cookies), and Tomato sauce. I was told to take Prilosec for the first year after surgery, but I forget and take it maybe once a week if that. But I have no issues, so, I don't feel the need. Another thing to take into consideration is that my "trigger" foods are mostly eliminated since I do a high Protein, low carb diet. Haven't had the urge to have even one bit of chocolate or a cookie in 5 months. Completely blows my mind. So, maybe if your GERD can be controlled by diet, it will be easier to control it after surgery. Best of luck to you. I know that is certainly something to take into consideration.

Prior my sleeve, I rarely had heartburn.

Post op I had it really bad, and the Rabeprazole I was given did not help me. My reflux was getting worse, so I asked for Nexium (Esomeprazole) script, and this fixed it.

I am now 6 months post op, and the reflux is gone. I am taking Nexium now every 4-5 days (instead of daily), and will go off it soon.

I had no reflux prior to surgery and no reflux until 8 months post VSG. Starting at 8 months I had increased acid and it got so bad PPIs offered no relief. I converted to bypass on 7/1 and my acid is gone. Knowing what I know now, if I had reflux prior to surgery I never would have had VSG. I would have gone straight to bypass.

I am really scared. I am starting to have a burning sensation when I wake up in the middle of the night - I think it is LPR because I can taste Fluid going up my throat. My voice is hoarse, and now I have this weird sensation in my chest.

Some days I can taste a tiny bit of blood in the back of my throat. I just wish my dr had given me statistics on this. I told him that I didn't want the sleeve because of malabsorption issues, and he told me that it was a legitimate reason: However he did not tell me that the malabsorption can weight out the possibility of developing esophageal carcinoma down the line. I explained to him that I had an uncle who died from it.

Did you see a doctor who specializes in revisions from sleeve to roux en y?

There are no malabsorption issues with a sleeve because the small intestine is not altered.

My surgeon has significant experience and specializes in not only Bariatric surgery but reflux surgery as well. I had zero complications after either surgery. I fact I recovered significantly faster from my conversion to RNY than from my VSG. Yes my insurance paid for it. Which, frankly, was a shock to me. My surgeon does a significant number of revision surgeries and gets referrals from other doctors in the LA area.

Reflux is the worst and I'm grateful every day that it's gone. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me!

I'm a band to sleeve revision. I did not have acid reflux before the sleeve. Now I do have it with vengeance. I took omeprazole for 15 months which took care of the reflux but my regular doc took me off it becuz of the bad longterm side effect (dementia, and liver problems) . Then came the acid reflux. Now I take Famotidine 20mg Tablets twice a day. It helps but still take TUMS about 5 times a day. The upside is I don't eat as much because as soon as I eat sometihng the acid starts up and I'm lose all hunger.

I am 7 years out from my sleeve surgery and I have just now started to have unbearable heartburn. It's really painful.

I take Gavascon liquid quite frequently, tums as well. I take Nexium right now, but I've found if I switch between nexium and Protonix, it seems to work better. I was taking Protoinix and it quit working. then I switched to Nexium which worked for awhile. It stopped working so I went back to Protonix. Again it worked for awhile, and now I am back on Nexium.

I don't know what I'll do if it gets worse bc I don't have the money to pay for a revision to bypass. My ins. would not cover it.
