I had RNY almost 7 months ago....I chose it because I already had bad heartburn and was told the sleeve could make it worse....Oh and I have only had one episode of mild dumping early on...I ate some creamy Peanut Butter and I think I ate it too fast! Best of luck to you in whichever procedure you chose! [emoji3][emoji106] Hw: 324 SW: 295 CW: 225 ....only one more pound to 100 lbs lost since I began this journey last Oct.

You need to research JAMA, ASMBS and other articles and studies, review YOUR personal medical history and discuss it with your surgeon what is the preferred procedure for you.

Was the medical coordinator's opinion taking in all of the variables? Was it ascertained using the scientific method? Of the VSG patients who may not have lost as much of their excess weight, how many of them are adhering to their post sleeve lifestyle changes or are they falling into old habits, not exercising as much, eating too much high caloric foods, etc.?

From my research, the bypass procedure had a slightly greater initial excess weight loss but the longer term results were very close between the bypass and VSG.

There were some medical conditions that showed a greater percentage of improvement with the bypass surgery, but most had fairly similar improvement results.

There are pros and cons for each surgery. That is why there is no one surgery that fits all. Everyone needs to assess their personal medical history and expectations with their surgeon and doctors.

Hi Everyone!

So I've been in this process since June, gotten all my blood work done for the sleeve, had my psych evaluation, met the surgeon, had my one nutrition visit and up to now I was so sure I wanted the sleeve! I'm an RN, and I'm doing my surgery in my hospital system just another hospital! I happen to speak to the Bariatric Coordinator at my hospital and she told me DO THE BYPASS! If you're going to have he surgery done, get it done right the first time! She was explaining to me that she's seen the results with the sleeve and they're not as great as the bypass! She also mentioned that the long term results are much better with the bypass! So me as a nurse, I'm taking everything she said into consideration but now I'm stuck and I don't know what to do! My BMI is 46 and and I don't have any comorbities. I explained to her that I'm terrified of dumping syndrome. She also went on to tell me that having dumping syndrome is GOOD because it will remind you to not eat that food again and it will keep you from being in a hospital!

Has anyone else gone through this last minute? Was it an issue for insurance purposes? Did you have to change your surgery date? My surgery date is scheduled for October 6!

Please any insight will help!

I do have gone through the bloodwork, psych eval., met with surgeon, and now have to be scoped, and sleep apnea test. I was set on the sleeve, but read horror stories about acid reflex, after the sleeve. I talked to the surgeon about this, as I have had gerd for years. He said yes it is common, and what he is really starting to see is 4 to 5 years out from the sleeve people are REALLY experiencing reflux bad, and end up doing a revision to the bypass. So i have made up my mind to have the bypass, because I do not want to have a revision down the line. Im 57 now BMI 35 so Im not gonna chance having reflux daily and another surgery. Good luck to you. Hope I have helped somewhat.

My understanding, anyone with a BMI of 40 and above is a surgical candidate for RNY. I just want to make sure I make the right choice for myself and follow my heart in what will be best for me.

I have a BMI OF 35 and I will be able to have the RNYid i choose. Im leaning that way due to gerd.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
