International sleevers that went to Mexico: Visa/Customs question

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was wondering if there are sleevers out there who flew to mexico/ are flying to Mexico from another country other than the States?

I'm having my surgery with Dr Garcia in TJ and I'm flying from New Zealand to San Diego and getting picked up to cross the border. I booked my flights/applied for visa already and I'm just wondering what people went through as they went through customs/border. Can I openly tell them about my surgery? Will it matter if I'm going to be picked up from San Diego? My mother will be coming with me and we want to stay an extra week in San Diego post operation just to make a mini holiday out of it.

Any comments/suggestions will be greatly appreciated :) thank you!

Veronika, the best thing I can do is start by telling you to calm down. The same question in three different topics says that you're unnecessarily winding yourself tightly.

Because any country may change its customs rules at any time, you'll do well to check with the U.S. and Mexican consulate offices or embassies in NZ. It'll be important for you to be absolutely clear and concise so that the people you speak with give you what you'll need to know for your trip. For example, don't say, as you wrote here, that you'll be flying from NZ to Mexico when, in fact, you'll be flying from NZ to the US. (Being picked up and returned to San Diego is pretty standard for WLS in Tijuana.)

You're more than likely to be asked at each border the purpose for your travels. Yes, let them know that surgery is the purpose and that the after-stay in San Diego is holiday. Surgery and holiday are far more acceptable than what a customs agent may imagine.

Breathe easy. Have a great surgery and holiday. You will be terrific.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
