The Starving Mom 47 Posted September 4, 2016 So I am having Gastric Bypass on the 21st... Yay 16 more days!!! So here is the big one- I have an appointment with my primary Dr on Saturday to go on birth control - I have been using natural family planning with success for 2 years now but I know that after surgery I will have a huge fertility boost and I dont want to risk a pregnancy... Soooo I know the pill is not a super great option due to absorption issues- but what birth control have you all tried? I was thinking of the depo prevara because I have had success in the past with it- but I also gained weight on it and I am worried about using a birth control that could be counter productive. Have any of you had any success with the depo? What birth controls would you recommend?
KristenLe 5,979 Posted September 4, 2016 Talk to your Dr about Mirena (IUD) but be sure to ask your surgeon before starting anything as it may cause concern for blood clots. You may need to wait until after surgery to start.
The Starving Mom 47 Posted September 4, 2016 I talked to the surgeons office and they said that I am ok to start birth control- they just said the pill is not advisable.
madadams 130 Posted September 4, 2016 I have had several mirena coils which are brilliant but stopped working for me in the end. I was on the pill initially post op but my cycle went mad! I had persistent bleeding. 3 weeks ago I was sterilised under local anaesthetic as an outpatient- literally took 10 mins with no post procedure pain. So glad I did it. Tomorrow I will have an endometrial ablation which will hopefully stop the periods altogether. Sent from my SM-G935F using the BariatricPal App
emme.vee 142 Posted September 4, 2016 I would suggest the copper IUD. I had one for several years and had 0 issues. After my last baby, I had the Mirena for 6 months and I was all but suicidal by the time I got it taken out. Not to mention I had a heavy period for almost the entire time I had it in. Works for some people does terrifying things to others . Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Djmohr 6,965 Posted September 4, 2016 @@madadams Wow, that is neat to hear they can do it so fast under a local these days. I had my tubal ligation immediately following the birth of my 2nd child. I was only 19, married with 2 kids and was married to a horses a$$. I knew there was no way I wanted more children with him so I asked my ob/gyn to perform the surgery. It was a actual knock you out surgery and one night in the hospital back then. They added it right on to my 3 day stay from having a baby. Boy have things changed. I will say....my doc should never have agreed to do it at 19 and years later when I met and married my now husband (been married to him for 29 years), I had wished they were not tied. However, I got over it quickly and am thankful for my two beautiful boys and their now 12 year old daughters.......being a grandparent is the best!
Moogle 116 Posted September 5, 2016 I've been on Nexplanon (implant) since about February. Been happy with it. No periods anymore, just a day or so of spotting every two months. I had it for four months before my surgery and I did not have any issues with weight gain with it. The only thing that is weird is that I have to use blood pressure cuffs on my right arm and everyone seems like they like to do it on the left arm.

I was shocked when they said I could have it without anaesthetic in the OPD. It was brilliant and I'd certainly recommend it. It was called essure but I'm in the UK so might be different in the US. I only have 1 child but he's 18 now and off to university so I'm certain at 45 years old I don't want any more! Lol. I'll just wait for the grandkids...... sey1008 43 Posted September 5, 2016 I'm still preop but I'm going to continue my depo shots for a while. I HAVE gained weight, but I have two children conceived while on the pill (taken as perfectly as possible) and it's the only bc option I can currently afford while going through the wls process (terrible insurance). I hope maybe next year to get a tubal, but I'm also definitely done with having kiddos. Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App
SoExcited101 190 Posted September 5, 2016 I was sleeved on 8 22 16 & my doctor told me I had to come off of the pill for at least 2 months. I would talk to your doctor who is doing your surgery before you do the birth control thing to be safe.
