Why am I gaining weight?!?!

Recommended Posts

I have buckled down! Watched everyday what goes in my mouth (both food & liquid) written down not only what I have eaten but the calories, fat content etc. keeping my calories at 1750 or lower. I was going to the gym getting back to the routine that I was in prior to my daughter leaving for college and my father suddenly passing away. In about 2 weeks I was down 7 pounds, to say totally over the moon was an understatement. Now today I weigh and I gained 4.6 pounds in 7 days!!! Why the sudden weight gain in the short amount of time? What do I do?

I had gastric bypass 5 years ago, my heaviest was 265, my lowest was 128. My dr.'s goal weight for me was 175, I eventually ended up at 145 for a good long while. 2 years ago my dr said that he would like to see me at 160-166. I know I shouldn't complain at all since I am weighing 163.4 but when you see the scale go down after going up for so very long it's very discouraging, almost heartbreaking.

Weight can fluctuate from one day to another. It also depends on when you weigh yourself. I generally weigh myself first thing in the morning butt naked and that gives me some consistency. But when I am dressed with my shoes, leather belt, wallet, etc. that can easily add 5 extra pounds to my weight.

Here is my approach to the "Maintenance" phase.

It's unlikely you gained that much weight in fat in 7 days. It's most likely Water retention. Be sure you're getting enough non caloric drinks daily, avoid a lot of sodium, etc. I am pre-op but can gain or lose 5 lbs overnight from fluids. I weight 284 last night and 278 this morning. Hang in there!

yeah, there's no way you could have gained 5 pounds of fat in a week. Watch your sodium levels, drink as much Water as humanly possible, and breathe. :) I understand that anxiety and frustration, believe me! I gain 5-10 pounds every freaking month around my period. It's horrible. But I soldier through because I know it's all Water retention, and sure enough, I lose all of it again and get back to actual weight loss not long after. Hang in there! You're doing great. :) Think about how much better you feel and look and how much healthier you are now compared to when you began this process. Even if you were stuck here forever (which I highly doubt) would it really be all that bad? That's how I look at it when I get stressed about the number on the scale. I'll take 203 over 450 any day!

For your weight, you should be drinking AT LEAST 10 8 ounce cups of Water a day, more if you're working out. Also many factors can contribute to this, are you sleeping enough? Are you starting your period this week? Are you going thru peri menopause or menopause? Are you stressed out? How much sodium are you consuming? Are you weighing yourself in the same place every time? Are you weighing yourself around the same time every day? Have you pooped? How often are you pooping? Have you measured yourself instead of just weighing in? Are you possibly gaining muscle?

All these are small little parts of a puzzle that make up our weight fluctuations. I'm sorry you're frustrated. Maybe hide the scale from yourself for a few days?

I'm sorry to hear about your father. My condolences.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
