Struggling with Preop diet

Recommended Posts

Anyone have advice?

I've fallen into a rut of chicken breasts and salad. And started eating too much junk food.. I need to get my act together. I still have another month at least before I get my surgery date but I want to try to lose as much as I can before then. I'm just dealing with a lot of emotional crap which makes my eating habits take a dive. Any helpful tips would be appreciated.

Start a list of all the things you want to do after weight loss and keep it somewhere visible to review when need that extra boost! Try different Protein and veggies so you don't feel like you're deprived. Eat 5-6 small meals a day about 3 hrs in between and tons of non caloric drinks. Distract yourself when you have a craving - go for a walk, paint your nails, color, read, garden, etc. You can do it! Stay strong!

I'm being honest..I couldn't follow the pre-op diet thoroughly. But since surgery, those cravings are gone. It's amazing!! Don't beat you self up too much.

It REALLY is hard. I've been working at it and doing way better than I ever expected and lost about 28 pounds.. But I wish I weren't dealing with cravings or hungry all the time.

Have you tried the south beach diet? It offers a huge variety of food, great ideas, recipes, etc. And once you get the junk food out of your system, you cravings will lessen or go away.

If I could eat healthy all the time and not be hungry I wouldn't need the surgery. I wouldn't be obese. My doctor requires a short 3 day liquid diet prior to surgery, but I know that will be tough for me. I am researching and trying new ways to get my Protein up NOW (I don't even have a surgery date yet) and drinking more Water but there is no way I am going to let myself be hungry. I have been doing that for years and it didn't work.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
