Help. I am 15 months post-op and just the last few days, I am having severe chest and then back pain when drinking and eating. Then the pain lingers the rest of the time (just escalates when I am swallowing). I am already on a PPI daily and have been since surgery. I do struggle with reflux occasionally but this doesn't really feel the same. Any ideas? I have been drinking a LOT of soda lately. Could it be acid from the soda (or something else) caused an ulcer? Do I call my bariatric surgeon or my GI Dr (neither accepts my new crappy insurance - not does my GP- but I don't know that I want to change drs now - I wil just have to pay out of pocket). This is painful so I don't want to wait too log to get it checked but not sure where to start.

@@KristenLe - I do still have my gallbladder. I had lots of tests just under a year ago because I was having pain in that area but they decided no gallbladder issues and just gave me Bentyl which does help when I get pain in that area.

Instead of an ulcer (or maybe in addition to), I have figured out it is basically a spasm in my esophagus. It is just occurring when I eat or drink and not because I am full - It is just after 1 drink or 1 bite and takes about 5 to 10 seconds after taking that bite or drink, just as it hits my the part of my esophagus just below my breast bone. Then the lingering pain after but not near as bad as that spasm. I think you are right and should call the dr on Tuesday.

Just an update in case someone else is researching and runs across this post, this pain lasted off and on about 4 days and then completely stopped. Haven't had it again. I must have either had some food stuck or severe reflux or something. As long as it never comes back, I don't really care what it was! ????

Well, its good your pains were resolved.

I've had similar issues, but I think mine is from digesting Protein.

Happened about an hour after I finished my morning Protein shake.

Every day.

I found some stuff at Walmart call "Me+my digestive Results" and that works for me.

Some kind of enzyme stuff for digestion that sure solved my problem.

They say it works for gluten and lactose as well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
