"Tolerable"...what does it mean?

Recommended Posts

I hear and see this a lot. Is this a stupid question?

What do the docs mean by

"Are the liquids tolerable"?

Or "Make sure your food is tolerable before going to the next stage".

Does this mean:

Am I vomiting after I drink or eat?

Is it painful when the food goes down?

Does the liquid stay down?

Does it feel like it's coming back up but stays down?

Do you feel the food processing or dropping into your stomach pouch?

So many variations to this term "tolerable". Can someone make it plain for me?

Help someone.

I think you hit the big ones already.

Think of it in terms of heat. For me the mild heat of a jalapeño has always been desirable, the heat of a habanero is tolerable and the heat of a Scotch Bonnet pepper is NOT tolerable.

In bariatric terms I can say that I find that eating a cup of food in a meal is tolerable, 1.5 cups of food in a meal is NOT tolerable as it leaves me miserably full and uncomfortable. Eating high sugar content foods is NOT tolerable as it leaves me with diarrhea and upset stomach.

Going to McDonald's.....ordering their Artisan Grilled chicken Sandwich and leaving off the Buns and lettuce is a meal that is tolerable in size and flavor is to my liking.

Diet sodas for me are NOT tolerable due to the carbonation making me uncomfortable.

Sort of a random list......sorry.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
