Hospital Weight Gain

Recommended Posts

Most people do. I gained 9 pounds. It came off in four days. It's the IVs.

I stepped on the scale when I got home, so excited to see how much I'd lost in the hospital annnnnd bubble popped! I "weighed" more than I did pre-surgery! Heck, even at my one week post op appointment, I was right back at my weight when I went in. But very, very shortly thereafter, the number started dropping rapidly. Phew! I'm 6 weeks out today and down almost 30 pounds from my surgery weight. So don't panic! It's all the fluids, plus your body underwent a lot of trauma. It'll start coming off. It has slowed down quite a bit from the original rate, but slow and steady wins the race. Keep your head up and good luck!

Yeah, I had lost 13 pounds on the 3 day liquid diet prior to my surgery so I freaked out a bit when I came home after surgery to have gained all of it back. But as others said, it disappeared rather quickly, re: I peed a lot those 24 hours after coming home!

So you only had a 3 day pre op prep? This is crazy that difference in drs. Im required to do a 14day liquid diet

I gained 5 lbs while I was there. I've pretty much lost that 5 lbs already. Actually I'm 8 days post op and lost 15 lbs.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
