Made the bmi but now.....

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So at first my BMI was only 39 with no health issues. Today I met with my psychologist to find out that my treatment in this department could effect my chances for qualifying. Been being treated for depression and anxiety since 2012. Dad diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Battled that with him for 9 months. Lost him in July 2013. In MAY of 2014 my mother-in-law diagnosed with ovarian cancer that then went on to spread throughout her body. She lost her battle on May 30 2016. Been on meds and having therapy to help me deal with all this. To think this could stop me from getting WLS is so unfair. I'm trying to make me the healthiest me I can be.

I am currently taking Zoloft for depression and anxiety starting with the passing of my dad and so on. But my office never seen that as a problem because I was already taken care of it and acknowledged of my situation

I agree w KristenLe, can't imagine that being proactive and getting the help you need would hurt your chances for surgery. If anything, it shows that you know how to access the resources you need in times of stress and struggle. I bet you'll be fine.

I hope my surgeon looks at my situation that way.

I am a emotional reck with major depressive bipolar disorder. I'm on a few psych meds. When I saw the doc, and nut that wasn't even an issue as long as I was being treated.

I was extremely worried because my medical records show a fairly long string of misdiagnosed psychological problems when I had delayed Post partum depression and PTSD. We got to "the questions" and my psychologist said that she's going to pass me because what she's looking for is cognitive disabilities, lack of understanding, untreated eating disorders, and things like untreated depression. You should be totally fine if your issues are being treated and under control! I know the anxiety is impossible to calm, but it really wasn't bad at all. I was a wreck before hand.

First off, I'm so sorry for your losses. I work in cancer research and I know the trials that families go through, especially if it is a long, drawn-out process. I lost my mom in 2015 from a heart attack, and in a strange way I'm thankful she passed quickly and that's something I don't think I'd say unless I worked in the field I do...

I have had depression from a very young age, and I had to explain to the psychologist how my last major depressive episode was 2015 after my mom died (complicated relationship), and I was also planning my wedding, which was also super stressful. She asked me if I thought my feelings about my mom were regular grief or true depression, and I think it's important to know where the grief ends and the depression takes over.

My own med history says I was on prozac, zoloft, paxil, celexa, and wellbutrin for my depression, not all at the same time of course (age ~15 - 22ish). I have depression and bipolar and alcoholism on every branch of my family tree, so I was careful to explain the situations I was under while taking these meds, and how I handle it now. If you show your resilience and that your coping mechanisms are healthy ones, they should clear you. The fact you are seeking help and are on a stable dose of antidepressants shows you take initiative to properly help yourself, instead of self-medicating with food of alcohol, for example. Best of luck!

Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement. Today I talked to my bariatric case manager. She said that they require 2 months in a row of 40 bmi. I explained that in the orientation class that they told us we only had to have one bmi within the last year. (I am with Kaiser). When I talked to her on Monday she knew I was coming in for my official height and weight on Thursday 9/1. I feel very uncomfortable.

The surgeon is calling me on the 13th to discuss my health and to tell me if he accepts me into the program. This is the same surgeon that took out my gallbladder 2 years ago and he told me then I needed bariatric surgery. At the time that was the last thing on my mind. I just wanted the pain I was having to be gone. Doc preformed emergency surgery to remove galbladder.

Back to 5he case manager. She said if the surgeon denies me that I can weigh in after 9/25 to see if my bmi is still at 40 or higher. Gosh this uncertainty is causing me anxiety. Lol

Keep your fingers crossed for me. I'll let you know what I learn on the 13th.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
