How long do we have to worry about leaks?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm 3.5 weeks post op and for some reason, I can't stop worrying about getting a leak. Does anyone know when we are "out of the woods" with those things? I've had a great recovery so far and everything is going fine. I've followed my doctors orders to a tee but for some reason, I'm still scared to death that I'm going to get a leak. Can someone please just tell me I'm being ridiculous?

I don't know the exact time but I know it takes at least 6 weeks for everything to heal.....From what I've seen most leaks happen early on.....like within the first two weeks.

But putting all that aside, if I were you and I was worried about this I would simply call my surgeon's office and ask them. I'm sure they'll be happy to put your mind at ease.

Congrats on your recent surgery! Keep up the good work!

This is a great question for your surgeon.

Unless you are doing something crazy like not following your post-op plan, taking steroids or NSAIDS, then I wouldn't worry about leaks at all. They really are pretty rare.

I'm not doing anything crazy. I'm almost too scared to eat soft food even though I've been cleared! Haha. I did email them and will see what they say. I hate asking these kinds of questions cause I feel like a crazy person. I'm young and healthy and have literally no reason to worry about these things but somehow, knowing that is still not enough.

I just heard back from my doctor who said that leaks generally happen within 2 weeks and they stop worrying about them completely at about the one month mark. Just FYI in case helpful for anyone.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
