Weight loss before surgery

Recommended Posts

There is no standard. This is a question you need to ask your surgeon. Some don't require any weight loss....other's do. some insurances require a loss and others don't......so you really need to ask your surgeon's office. Good luck to you!!

KMorri is correct - completely depends on your surgeon and insurance requirements. I started at 442lbs and was told I technically didn't HAVE to lose any but that I couldn't gain even one pound during my 6 month medically supervised period. Some want to see a certain percentage weight loss as a sign that you are committed to the lifestyle changes you'll need to make to be successfull. Others don't put any requirements on it.

My insurance doesn't require any weight loss during the 3 month monitored diet period, but the dietitian told me that I should lose at least 10. I'm down 2 pounds since my Welcome Group, and yesterday was my medical, dietitian and physical therapy required appointments. So the 90 days started yesterday, and will finish November 30th (approx). I was reassured that I should have no problem getting scheduled before the end of the calendar / insurance year on December 31st.

I started at 386 lost about 14 lbs. My surgeon put me on a Protein shake for Breakfast and lunch. dinner I was to eat no more than 400 calories or eat a Healthy Choice or Lean Causine meal. I was to do this diet 2 weeks before my surgery date. I lost 21 lbs which was a total of 45 lbs.

I'm having my surgery in Mexico with Dr. Garcia. So far I've not really talked to anyone but I have gotten emails. When I was excepted for surgery they said to be able to have bypass instead of sleeve I would have to loose some weight. Never said how much. I want to have bypass because I have diabetes really bad and I also have heartburn.

Maybe if you ask your question in the bypass forum or the Mexico forum (this is the gastric sleeve forum) someone with some experience will be able to answer your questions....but if I were you I'd email the center back and ask specifically how much weight you need to lose.......since it's their requirement only they can give you the correct information. Good luck!!

My insurance (CIgna) didn't require weight loss but my surgeon did - 5%. I actually got into a fight with them because the whole point of having the surgery is that I can't lose weight! But somehow I managed.

I started out at 478 lbs.

I lost 55 lbs in the 3 months that led up to my surgery.

I could've........should've......lost more.

I'm just under 200 lbs down in 10+ months.

I could've done more.......

I started my journey on March 21, and I've lost 86 pounds as of today. My surgery is scheduled for September 28. That gives me 28 days to lose 14 pounds. I am determined to make it to 100 pounds off by myself before they wheel me into surgery!!

My surgeon required a 10lb weight loss. My insurance had no requirements. I buckled down and managed to lose 32 before.

With Kaiser I believe it's a 10% weight loss. So for me I started at 275.5 so I need to lose 27 pounds. I'm at 19.9 pounds loss since 8/4/16 :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
