High Fiber diet/how to do it/advice please

Recommended Posts

I've struggled with Constipation since sleeve surgery 13 months ago. I take Fiber gummies, eat prunes, etc. and have been getting by ok. Today I had my first ever colonoscopy (super fun if you have never done it) and I got a lecture from the doctor about eating a high Fiber diet. I had hemorrhoids, apparently, as a result of the last year of lower fiber and higher Protein. I am very good about getting in all my Protein every day.

I honestly have no idea how to eat a high fiber diet anymore. I used to eat tons of salads and fruit, vegetables, Beans, but now I find that meeting my protein goal takes up most of my room and I have little room for salads and veggies. Even when I order a salad as lunch, I end up mostly eating the chicken off it to get in my protein and then I am full. I do eat a few servings of vegetables a day and sometimes a piece of fruit, but there is just no room for all the servings this doctor was recommending.

Does anyone have suggestions about how to eat 100 grams of protein a day and get in lots of fiber too?

During my group meeting yesterday, the NUT said to stay away from gummies. She suggested Benefiber mixed with Water or added to a recipe.

I do eat a lot of Beans. they have good Protein - satisfying and good Fiber. I also add benefiber to my morning drink and in the evening. I take a stool softener. and I eat a half a piece of oat toast on mornings when I have eggs.

I eat things like asparagus, brocolli, apple wedges with cheese.

Flax seeds and chia seeds have almost no carbs and are high in Fiber and Protein. I sprinkle them on everything. They add no flavor, just a bit of a texture that makes no difference to me. My husband swears by wheat germ, so there's that.

Avocado is a great source of fiber and is one of my favorite foods, too.

The first three add no bulk to your diet, the last is a staple in mine.

Another thing to remember is that Protein like cheese is a binder so you have to be careful. I eat a LOT of cheese, so I try to also balance things out a bit with healthy oils like EVOO. Avocado is another great source of healthy fat. Makes things....uhm...slide easier.

There is something to be said for the Quest brand of Protein bars. 21 grams of Protein and ~17 grams of fiber.......good stuff.

Just like @@LipstickLady said.....avocados are outstanding. I love fresh guacamole....easy to make and always tasty.

I'm going to pick up some flax seeds next time I'm in the store. Great suggestion there. They are a healthy add-in for certain.

These are good. Seems super easy to add the flax or chia seeds to yogurt, also, since i eat a lot of that. Thanks, guys!

I am going to use more chia. But I do put benefiber in almost every liquid I ingest.

Check in with your bariatric surgeon or dietitian -- it may be that they agree that given the serious medical problems you are suffering from, it's more important to eat a high fiber diet than it is to get 100 grams of Protein every day. There is nothing magical about 100 grams of protein, which is much, much higher than, for instance, US government guidelines call for in order to remain healthy.

Alternatively, you could do 3 high Protein Shakes plus tons of green veggies and a little bit of Beans and fruit and have that be your basic eating plan.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
