Hello! I am 4 years post-op VSG. I have been reviewing some research where VSG to RNY revision patients, who had [severe] acid reflux, were cured after Bypass. I was hoping to please get feedback from those of you who had VSG surgery and then converted to the RNY:

  • How severe was your acid reflux after VSG?
  • How many years did you wait before you convert? Was GERD the only reason?
  • Did the RNY revision completely cure your GERD?

Would greatly appreciate your feedback!

I just had my consult with my surgeon today, and i was gonna get the sleeve, but now, because of having years of gerd im leaning towards GB. My surgeon said, " that typically he,sees more reflux issues after 4 to 5 years out". But sleeve patients can and some get reflux about 3 months out also. I dont, want to have to do the revising later.

I had horrid GERD prior to surgery. Luckily, no signs of damage to my esophagus. I went right to RNY and had a short bout around month 3, but before and since no issues. At 5 months now. Can't imagine doing one procedure and then switching to another. Perhaps with sleeve you have more freedom in terms of food types you can consume, but for me, bypass was the best choice. No regrets.

I am not a revision but I had a very severe case of Gerd. I literally coughed non stop for over a year before my bypass. I was on the strongest and the maximum dose of Nexium for a very long time. The surgeon told me that had I gone with the sleeve and had trouble which was very likely that they would have no way to treat it given how bad my gerd was.

I had RNY and they had me continue Nexium for 30 days and then had me stop. I have never had a single episode of gerd nor even basic heart burn. I can eat foods like green pepper that I never could before. RNY cured my Gerd along with many other comorbities.

Omg. I too had a chronic cough and it just dawned on me- I no longer do!!! Thanks for pointing this out!!!

Thank you all so much for your feedback! I recently found this interesting study and it notes two promising points:

• "Our experience appears to be one of the largest in the literature."

• "Acid reflux symptoms resolved in 100% of patients..."

Not sure if I'm allowed to post links on here, but here it goes:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
