Surgery Cover Stories?

Recommended Posts

Hey all! I finally got my insurance approval, and I'm so excited to get sleeved. My question is for anyone who wasn't totally open about the procedure with coworkers.

Before anyone tells me not to lie, just be open, or just say "I don't want to talk about it", trust me, I've considered all the options. I'm very open about it with family and friends. It's just that I'm a teacher in a large school. People gossip, and I work with too many people who will tell STUDENTS inappropriate things about other teachers. I just don't want that attention. When someone asks why I'm out for a week, I just want to throw a different surgery out there. It doesn't need to account for a drastic weight loss necessarily, but that would be a nice perk. I was thinking hernia surgery. Any other ideas?

Since you've dictated what not to write here, tell people whatever you'll remember. Simple is best, as it elicits the fewest questions. By your account, the school is a gossip haven, so don't waste your time thinking it'll be any different for you.

I've told a few people that I'm going to be off work for "female surgery." Lie of omission, maybe, but works for me.

Well its just a vague truth. You are a female and you're having surgery therefore you are having female surgery. People just assume its an exclusively that kind of surgery It's all in how you spin

it.

You don't have to say you're going out for surgery. You can say you're going on vacay. I did. Out for 2 weeks and no one thought anything of it. My boss knew I was going for medical but she cannot disclose my personal health info. Plus when I submitted my claim, they don't disclose to your employer why you are out. They just email them your approval. I told my boss fibroid removal. She "assumed" I told my colleagues and asked whether they heard from me the following week. They were shocked and confused as I hadn't told them and I was pissed. I didn't tell my boss "not to say anything" so I couldn't get mad at her. Anyways i stayed off the whole six weeks instead of the 2 I'd planned since they "knew" anyways. When I went back I really just let them know I was fine and feeling well now. Those that got a little too personal I did say I had fibroids removed. My weight loss has been slow enough that they haven't really noticed yet but they will soon...

Had my boss never said anything, they wouldn't have suspected a thing.

I spoke to 1 co-worker awhile ago abt it & she was supportive...then I decided to drop it & not tell anyone at work, I didnt want rumors. I've continue the process without bringing it up. I joined Orange Theory Fitness & have been doing that for the past month (my coworker joined as well), they see me eating healthier & working out...so when the day come for my surgery& I'm losing the weight...there's no question, I go to the gym 5days a week & I'm eating Healthy.

I'm just saying that I'm having abdominal surgery. Which is true. No more details than that. They don't need to know anything more than that!

All good ideas! Thanks guys! We started setting up our classrooms this week, and already the gossip is flying about different people. It's just the culture of my school, I guess. I'm very interested to see what it's like when I start visibly losing weight!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
