Difficulties with liquids?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I had my surgery on Tuesday, so am just four days out. My biggest challenge at the moment is ingesting sufficient liquids. Sometimes I feel that it is hard to get the liquid down my throat, but mostly I feel discomfort when it hits my stomach. sugar-free ice pops and ice chips help, but I know that it is important to be able to drink increasing quantities.

I have Protein shakes and Isopure iced tea with lots of Protein that I want to start today, but am having so much trouble with actual drinking. Has anyone else experienced this and how did you deal?

The other thing is that I have a bizarre sense of actually feeling my internal organs, which seem heavy. Before surgery, they were anonymous entities, while now they are actually making their presence known.

Many thanks for your input.

Take even smaller sips and go slowly. Try different temps of liquids. It is so very important to get your liquids and Protein down.

@@skinnyjeansatlast Sip constantly and as @@suzzzzz said - try different temps. Try teas (decaf, flavored, iced or hot), broth, Powerade zero, Vitamin Water zero, infused Water - anything that you tolerate and just keep sipping throughout the day. Once the swelling goes down - it'll be easier. Be sure to take your PPI if prescribed. Someone also suggested crushed ice with crystal light over it like a snow cone or slushie which sounds really good). Take it slow - you'll get there!

@@skinnyjeansatlast -- I had my surgery on 8/23. In the last few days I have found that, for me, plain Water goes down like a brick no matter how small a sip and no matter what temperature. IF the Water has some flavor to it -- Mio, Crystal Light, Vitamin Water Zero, I can drink it no problem. Warm, but no hot liquids work for me. That first day was an endless array of trying different liquids and different temps. I've found my sweet spot and got down 48 ounces of liquid yesterday. Keep experimenting. And keep the sips really small at first. That was the hardest thing to learn to do because I have a history as a gulper.

Get the nectar grab and go. Lemonade and strawberry have been my life savior. I'm 5 days out that is all I have drank. Plus I'm addicted to ice chips right now

Who makes the drinks you are talking about? Thanks

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
