I started at 388 lbs. I'm currently a week and a day post op. I had complications and came close to death. I had major internal bleeding and had to have plasma and transfusions. It was quite scary. I stayed in the hospital for 7 days. I'm doing much better. Can handle Water and Popsicles and Protein Water but all the shakes I've tried have made me gag and heave. I am on anti nausea meds daily and am still in a fair bit of pain. I do get hungry...but am wanting real food. Not liquids! All in time. My first post op appt is next Tuesday. It was a very difficult experience for me and at this point I can't say I'd do it again. I probably will once weight starts coming off. I left the house for surgery at 350 and am currently at 355. I do have a HUGE hematoma that spans my entire abdomen belly and part of my back and is very tender and sore.

I sure hope it gets better. I'm so nauseous and don't want to eat or drink anything and have been forcing myself to at least drink Water so I don't end up back at the hospital with dehydration. That and my throat is killing me and everything exhausts me. This is so frustrating!!!!

It can be rough in the beginning, but it does improve dramatically as time rolls on.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your Protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes.
It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. I remember in the hospital after surgery I could not drink the Water because it tasted very chlorinated. Eventually I found flavored water such as Crystal Light to work O.K. Many experience problems drinking Protein Shakes. I hated them. But in the beginning I drank them, three 16-ounce protein shakes a day, in order to meet my protein requirements. You do not have to like protein shakes only tolerate them. There are many varieties of protein shakes available today. Experiment until you can find one you can tolerate. Over time as your meal volume increases, if you concentrate on consuming high protein meals, you can begin to reduce your reliance on protein shakes.

As far as Protein shakes go I suggest shakes from https://pescience.com/

If you use the code HANA you get 20% off of your order. The shakes taste amazing and have 27G of Protein per shake. I love the peanutbutter cup and the Cookies and cream. These will change your opinion of Protein Shakes.

As far as protein Water goes my NUT said not to use those as a source of protein. I guess they are collagen protein and are good for hair and nails. They do not have the right type of protein to build and maintain muscle.

I'm just going off what they have told me. I absolutely love my protein shakes and look forward to drinking them.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
