Birthday cake, I'll pass......

Recommended Posts

Today, one of our soldiers had his 19th birthday. Since he is far from home, our clinic bought him a birthday cake. I LOVE BIRTHDAY CAKE! White bday and wedding cake are my favorite Desserts. I won't have surgery until November but I'm already on a high protein/low carb diet. I've actually already lost all the weight I'm supposed to lose before surgery, so technically I could eat a small piece without sabotaging my weight loss goals. HOWEVER, I haven't had any sugar since August 1st, so I passed on it. Small pieces, bites, licks and tastes got me to where I am today, needing WLS. It wasn't easy! I really, REALLY wanted a piece! As my NUT said, I have to get control over these bad eating habits now. Even after I get sleeved, a chocolate chip cookie will smell and taste like a chocolate chip cookie. The surgery won't take away those cravings and desires. Only dedication and persistence on my part will lead me to a healthy lifestyle. I'm patting myself on the back now.

@@Armygalbonnie

exactly right!!!

you are doing great practicing before your WLS!!

losing necessary weight is great!!!

working on when to drink, when not to?

you said "haven't had any sugar since August 1st"

good for you

at some point, you can allow yourself a bite or two of cake

if you can control yourself to stop then

many abstain, not sure they can handle a JUST little bit

i frequently will abstain from a goodie i love

don't like to tease myself with a little bit - but that's just me

did you know that patting yourself on the back is good for you too

you are exerting arm around back and motion hitting back LOL

must count as "some calories"??? hmmmm!!!

keep up the good work, attitude/determination

you've got a lot going for you

@@proudgrammy Thank you for your encouragement! Right now, sugar is too tempting. I binge with sugar. I figured I best just stay away from the cake. I sure hope I can be as successful as you. You've done an amazing job! Congratulations! Next goal: Work on not drinking while I eat. That is really going to be a difficult one. Any recommendations?

I don't know if this will be encouraging or not, but I'm 11 weeks post op and anything with a super high sugar content gives me dumping so makes it really easy to say no. As whilst I know I'll enjoy it, it's not worth the aftermath.

With the not drinking and eating, it's not like you can't drink at all you just can't drink a lot. I still drink when I eat but I'll only take a very small sip to wet my mouth rather than huge ones and I wait for about 20mins after eating or I feel sick. Also remember liquids run through you much quicker than food Hope this helps

Nooooo, I love birthday cake! You all are very strong, because I would fall with temptation. I just spoke with someone who got the sleeve a year ago because he could still eat sugar with vs the RNY. It does suck to hear that you can still get dumping with sugar on the sleeve.

GOOD FOR YOU!!! I have no doubt you WILL be successful.

I chose the sleeve over RNY because I wanted to be "normal" after surgery. I wanted to be able to enjoy a bite or two of cake, or a few spoon fulls of ice cream. I was never a huge sweets eater but I wanted normalcy.

Oddly enough, I am one of those sleevers who dumps. I'm glad, too. It keeps me honest.

If I end up dumping after I get the sleeve, it will probably end up being a good thing for me as well. I would avoid sugar to keep me honest too. Funny thing is I was talking to my friend today who had RNY, and she can have sugar in limited quantities without the dumping. So I guess really whether the one gets the sleeve or bypass, it's solely up to how your body will respond to the surgery.

Kudos to everyone who is sticking to their diet! I really hope that I can get my head together to resist the foods that made me this way in the first place. The struggle is real!

Great job! I wish I said no or at least stopped eating that 1/2 gallon of ice cream tonight. I feel sick now. I guess because I'm getting close to my surgery Date I am having food funerals.... I need to just stop being silly.

Congrats on skipping the cake!!! I'm a little over 3 months post op and not to brag or anything, but I don't really know if sugar makes me dump or not. I haven't had any sugar in order to test it! :P .....I'm sure I will one day, but so far I haven't tried it.

As far as not drinking while you eat, the only way I was able to do it is to make sure I don't have a drink within reaching distance while I'm eating.....I drink right up until the time I start eating.....so my thing now is once I fix my plate, I put my bottle of flavored Water in the freezer.....eat my meal and wait about 30 minutes and TaaaaDaaaa I have a slushie!...

Good luck with your upcoming surgery!!!

Work on not drinking while I eat

@Armygalbonni

i think for many (me) not drinking while eating is veryyyyyy hard

i always drank while i ate since i was a little newbie 62+ years ago!! LOL

i remember mom's breast then baby food like it was yesterday

help for not drinking while eating??

Just Say No !!!!!

easier said than done

don't have Water et al around you while you eat

if anyone else around you has a drink....

throw it in their face then duck!!! LOL

in all honesty, don't expect or ask others to follow how you eat or drink

OP reducing their intake around you is helpful/easier for you - buttttt

there is no reason for them to HAVE to eat, drink like you (except their health!!!)

not drinking while eating - the more you do it the easier it will get (kindof ;))

at 4++ years PO - i will have a few sips while eating, and drink sooner than

later

Do as i say, not as i do!!! LOL

happy November surgery day

speedy recovery

good luck

kathy

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
