What preop tests did you have?

Recommended Posts

So far I've had a physical, an echocardiogram, a psych evaluation, and blood draws for thyroid. I have a lung function test tomorrow, then a gall bladder ultrasound Friday and an endoscopy and drug screening next week. I'm starting to feel like a lab rat, lol.

My BMI is 37 and I have no serious co morbidities. I know it's better safe than sorry but I'm just wondering if everyone had so many tests?

I have had Psych Eval, Upper GI Series, EKG, Lots of blood work (10 vials). I already had sleep study before pursuing WLS. I don't have gallbladder. I'm expecting a few more tests right before surgery (have to go to pre-op at hospital before surgery).

I had bloodwork, chest x-ray, upper gi, and an ekg. I wanted the gallbladder ultrasound, but they said they only do that if you have gallbladder problems. I was glad not to need the sleep study.

Sounds like we all have to be pincushions and lab rats for a while, lol. I've had SIX appointments since Friday and I have 3 more before Tuesday. Hopefully then I can get a surgery date!

They require you to do a drug test? Is it your insurance that requires it or your surgeon? I've never heard of that before.

I've had to/will have to do many tests. I've had:

-Venus doppler of legs

-Chest x-ray

-Stomach ultrasound

-Endoscopy

-sleep study and extra overnight to get cpap programmed for me

-Psych Evaluation

-Blood work

-Echocardiogram

-Stress Test for the Cardiologist

-Not sure what it'll involve yet, but I also have to have clearance from the pulmonologist.

It's been a lot, but it'll be worth it in the end.

I haven't had to do a stress test or pulmonary clearance - I hope they don't spring that on me at my pre-op appointment! I was hoping for a surgery date on that day - not more testing being ordered!

I've had labs, urine test (they are checking for nicotine) a chest xray, sleep study (I found out I do have moderate sleep apnea so I will be fitted for my cpap soon) pshyc eval is coming up next month and an endoscopy just not sure when yet. I believe that's all I have to do.

My surgeon does the drug testing. I thought it was weird but I don't do any drugs, so whatever.

Wow, they really put you through the wringer! Do you have some pre-existing health problems or something?

All I had to do was a psych eval, chest X-ray, EKG and blood work. My BMI was 39 and the only medical issue was high blood pressure (which is now gone).

Huh. That is odd, but I likely wouldn't care much either.

Haha, yeah, you can definitely say that! My insurance (United Healthcare Community Plan) requires all these tests. What's even more fun is that for each doctor I see, I have to get a referral from my primary care physician. I've never been a big fan of going to the doctors for that reason -- paperwork and phone calls that feel like they go nowhere. Thankfully, I know for sure there will be a reward at the end for all the time I've spent in Dr's offices this year.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
