Help with protein

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I'm 3 weeks out from surgery and am in the puréed phase. I'm having a hard time getting in my daily Protein and am looking for suggestions on what to eat. My doctor would prefer I not rely on Protein shakes so I'm really struggling. Any help that can be offered is a HUGE help!

I talked to the nutritionist about Protein. She said 60 - 70 grams per day. My question is, if this becomes absorbed by the small intestine, how much do you need daily before you absorb that much? I am also interested in vitamine absorption. How much do you take in order for your body to get what it needs. Help

At three weeks I was on soft foods so lots of Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna, turkey, etc.

I'm trying to get in the 60g of protein a day but my doctor says that's the minimum that is needed. Also I'm taking two mulivitamins and two Calcium supplements a day along with B12.

so I would reccommend purchasing genepro! it IS a Protein Powder, but you can mix it in anything (it's flavorless). I try to stay away from shakes because I become so dependent on them/replace all of my meals with them. Instead, I eat "normal" now and since I drink a lot of coffee during the day, I just add GENEPRO to my coffee and I can never tell its there! I had it during my pureed stage too and would put it into pudding and stuff. works wonders! it's a tablespoon sized scoop and is 30 grams of Protein per scoop.

Take Bariatric Advantage chewable Multivitamins. It has all the b Vitamins you need. Don't but that over the counter Vitamin supplements. It is hard to take in 60-70 grams.

Protein Shakes are my icing on the cake for meeting my daily Protein goals 75-80 grams... I either start or end the day on a syntrex nectar double Cookies and cream with lactose free milk (30 grams)... salmon, tuna, shrimp, chicken and Turkey are my major protein points... good luck with your journey... you will find your favs for daily protein.

Yoghurt, eggs, cheese and remember you can add Protein Powder to foods if you're struggling to get it all in.

I don't do shakes cause I'm not a fan, but it was near important to hit my goal with food alone at 3 weeks. It's gets easier, I promise

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
