Regret! Anyone? Missing real food!

Recommended Posts

I have never regretted my decision to have this surgery. Even when missing the ability to chew those first few months.

Down the road, a ways from now you will be able to eat good quality food. You will hopefully likely find that you simply enjoy real whole foods more than all the other stuff.

The first 8 weeks for me were the hardest, but now I don't feel like I am missing anything. Contrary, I am able to actually enjoy life.

I eat to live, not live to eat. Hopefully you will find that same is true for you in the future. If you are really struggling it would be a good idea to meet with a therapist that focuses on Bariatric patients.

Best of luck to you.

Can I ask one question?

What is your definition of real food? Do you need to adjust your mental model.

I used to think real food was burgers, fries, pizza, Cereal, Pasta, bread.....etc.

Now real food to me is good dense Proteins, fruits and vegetables and I look forward to eating those most of all. On the days that I try those other things, I feel like crap. And I am glad about it....at least I know I won't gain my weight back.

Does that make sense.

Thanks D Mohr. It's taking me some time to get through this. I'm 4 weeks post and my stomach will not allow anything but broth and popsicles. Everything else makes me nauseous, even the Protein drinks. I've tried them all. All I can't tolerate is those things I just mentioned. I don't regret my procedure because I want to be healthy. I just have to give me time to heal.

How are you getting Protein at this point? I know Protein takes some getting used to but it is critical in your diet now. You need it to heal and it needs to be a major part of your diet.

I would keep trying options until I found one. I had a similar situation and finally was recommended premier Protein shakes. They are great because they are ready made so no grit and no fuss. I feel like the chocolate tastes most like rich chocolate milk. Someone pointed this out and I never thought about it but the container is shaped square and the opening small so you don't smell the protein either which makes it easier to drink.

I still drink one every morning and I am 23 months post op.

Keep trying, you don't want to get sick.

I had surgery July 12th. I was just remarking to a friend how delicious my chicken and brocolli were for lunch today. All 4 or 5 bites of it. Being on liquids and puree makes you appreciate eating something solid. While I can't eat much quantity, food tastes great and I'm super happy with my weight loss so far. So much so, that i don't regret a thing. Taking my life back.

Djmohr has made some excellent point's here, I don't miss junk food at all, I didn't get to 428#'s by eating healthy foods! I'm to the point where I can handle most all Proteins there's creative options to making anything taste great but if you're right out of surgery and you're already missing food's you can't eat that's the mental changes you have to make in order for your surgery to be a success. I also recommend Premier Protein shakes, good stuff! best of luck to you!

Oh my! yes I'm afraid that I might feel the same way. I have my surgery on September 20th n you know there's sweets coming up from Halloween especially having kids that wants candy instantly and then there's Thanksgiving all your favorites and family, shortly after its Christmas... Soo I'm already going to counseling and groups support to prepare myself bc I'm doing everything so fast. My surgery got approved in a month and prior to that I jus decided to go for bariatric surgery like in May and realizing that it's a lifetime decision is heavy and hard to cope with but I know that it's going to be worth it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
