Epidural cortisone injections

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I had my surgery in 2013 and lost about 85lbs. I was down to 150lbs and then started having back issues. Mid 2015 I started getting epidural cortisone injections for pain relief, but since then I've gained weight. I'm at 180lbs now. At first I didn't put two and two together... I thought it was because of a lack in exercise and increase in food intake then I'd be reminded when eating out with non-sleeved people, that I still have a lot of restriction so I don't believe it's because I'm overeating.

My point to all this is have any of you had similar experiences with cortisone injections? I've stopped getting them as of this year but in 2015 I had 4.

Cortisone is a steroid and one of the side effects could be weight gain. I have gotten one cortisone shot before and didn't experience weight gain from that one. However, I took another form of steroids called methylprednisolone and put on over 15 pounds.

Please see the link below for more information on cortisone shots:

http://www.webmd.com/arthritis/what-are-cortisone-shots .

I was diagnosed with a herniated disc several years ago. What I found to be helpful that alleviated ongoing, intermittent back pain (which when it occurred was very excruciating) was Chiropractic treatment.

I wish you all the best with getting the weight back off and hope that you can find an alternative treatment to the cortisone shots!

I've had a lot of the epidural injections, presurgery. They did certainly help me with putting on weight. The Lyrica did too. Just put on weight no matter what.

Back issues can be frustrating. Not knowing what you are facing, I'd like to offer a few suggestions that have made a difference for me, in hopes that they might help you. (If you haven't tried them already and the doc approves.)

Physical therapy- they might be able to target certain muscle areas to help

TENS unit- electrical stimulation that feels weird but is a lot better than pain

Inversion table - make sure doc gives the OK. I think it might be bad for certain back issues.

Accupuncture - no joke on this one but you have to get a good one. Some just aren't worth the money.

Patches - some people like icy hot. I prefer Salon pas- you can get them in a lot of places.

Meditation - no the pain is not in your head. It just helps me keep calm and focus on life when the pain gets bad.

If possible Water exercise helped me a ton.

Good luck!

I was just going to follow and read others stories and experience with this but having just had lower lumber injections (L4-5 S1 fused with cadavers bone and plates) this past Wednesday has me thinking about cancelling the bilateral ones i have scheduled in another week or so.

I have so much swelling in my feet and legs, i just assumed it was from the oral steroids im on for something else. I am only around 6-7 weeks post-op and this bought of injections hasnt felt right, again assuming it was other health issue related.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I know my pain management doctor can do an IV push which is nice. Maybe yours does as well?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
