When Was Everyone Cleared for "Real" Food

I am twentyone days post op today. Starting next Tuesday at four weeks I a cleared to eat "real" food. I am having a hard enough time getting any food in now. How am I suppose to start "real" food? Also, my "green" book that has my different food stages in it completely contradicts its self. At stage three I am allowed soft or moist food. One sentence says NO Pasta till 6 months out then the next says I am allowed soft noodles. It kills me how different the diets and stages are. Also, it kills me that one persons doctor tells them to never eat something again, while the next person is allowed to eat that same thing in week one. What is everyone else's experience switching over to "real" food. How did you handle it?

Confusion is one of the things that seems to begin early on....as in the puree stage. It seems there are allowances made to allow many foods due to their soft mushy texture......but not allow those same foods later as they aren't good for weight loss.

For me it was simply easier to avoid them throughout as I'd been on low-carb Protein shakes for weeks. Why the hell would I introduce high carbohydrate foods back....only to wean off them again ? It just seemed simpler to sidestep that minefield and stay low carb and not be tormented with carb cravings and such.

I'd be willing to venture a bet that folks that report post op hunger would find this go away if they'll transition away from sugars and simple carbohydrates.

Just my two cents based on my own experiences.

@@ChunkyMonkeyGoneSlim I have the same green book with the same contradiction...and I live in WA. We might have had our surgeries at the same facility :)

I'm with @@Dub on this one...I skipped the noodles entirely, and went as low-carb as possible right from the start of soft foods. I do think noodles are listed in the soft phase because they're easy and come in the can of chicken noodle Soup that some people may just mush up and eat. I've been avoiding using anything in a can, as I'm also watching my sodium intake pretty carefully.

I trust the surgeon who did my sleeve, and so I trust in his post-op instructions, too. The green book is a great general resource, but at my post-op appointments, my doc definitely talked with me and helped me tailor my eating a bit.

I'm over 2 months out now and I eat most everything. My quantities are still very small and I'm avoiding simple carbs as much as possible. I've had some quinoa and a very small amount of brown rice, both sat very well with my new stomach but I've not had any more rice because it's not where I want to be nutritionally. A typical day for me would be coffee with Protein powder and some plain greek yogurt in the morning, lean Protein and cheese for lunch, whatever protein and veg I make for my family for dinner. I usually eat a few almonds mid-afternoon, and a sugar-free popsicle after dinner. I keep a Protein Bar and a little ziplock with some almonds and Jerky in my bag in case I get hungry and I'm not at home.
I still eat very small bites, chew everything very well and take a long time for my meal. On a great day, I get 64 oz of Water in...on a normal day, I get more like 48 oz. I'm working on it :)

I am also in Washington which I'm sure you noticed :) I was worried about my Water intake because, after the 64 ounces I am still thirsty and I am so worried about stretching my sleeve. And I have had a really hard time protein wise. One of the reasons being is that since surgery I can not handle anything with milk in it. My diet consist of mainly steamed carrots, peaches and chicken. I am supposed to start "real foods " Wednesday. But, I can hardly eat mashed foods. It just feels off when I swallow its like the food rubs against something.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
