Time frame from 1st appointment to surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am new here and just wondering what the time frame was for everyone from when they had the first consultation with the Dr to the time that they had surgery?

I have met my deductible for the year with my insurance but not my out of pocket maximum, so I will still need to come up with about $4K. I have my first consultation on 9/8. I don't really want to take out a loan to come up with the out of pocket and I could have the money in cash around January. Am I going to my consultation too early?

My first appointment was 5/12 - my surgery is 9/6. If your process moves faster than that, you could always just tell them you want to

Wait to have surgery until January.

I had my consult on 07/22 and I'll have surgery in November. About a 4 month process.

It all really depends on your insurance requirements...I have BS of CA and first appt was 6/20 and surgery was on 8/19. My insurance had no requirements for a supervised diet -- many require 3 or 6 months.

No - it often takes 4-6 months (or longer!).

Thank you for all the replies! I guess I was just worried that once the insurance approved I would have to do it right away. Sounds like I am going at about the perfect time though. My insurance requires that I work with their weight loss coaches for 3 months prior and I am about half way done with that.

You will have so many days once insurance approves it. Some insurances give 3 month approvals some 30 days. Ask your insurance. But the surgeons office can give them an estimated date as well.

I have Anthem BSBS and have to wait 6 months so my first appointment was July 27 and surgery will not be until January or February. Totally depends on your insurance.

I have the same insurance and it is an 8 to 10 month process. Surgery is April to June.

I seemed to have taken a long time compared to most on here. I had my first Dietitian appointment in March and I am scheduled for Mid October. So a solid 7 months.

Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
