My PCP "doesn't care about me"

Recommended Posts

I am only 5 days post from having my gastric balloon (orbera) inserted and my doctor has been my best support system. She has called me everyday and I even called her this morning panicking, crying hysterically because I was mid panick attack. I suffer from anxiety disorder and told her from the beginning this will be challenging for me as I do not manage my illness with Meds, but through exercise and meditation. You need to feel safe, understood, and in line with your surgeon. If your not 100% confident in your weight loss team, how do you expect to be 100% confident in yourself. This is one time when you deserve to be absolutely selfish and have the best care possible. You deserve it! You're worth it! Good luck and best wishes... ❤️

I would not be afraid to change as long as you have your pre op physical done. Otherwise it could delay you.

If you have not, then I would suggest very quickly after surgery getting a new PCP, in fact, I would share your story with your Bariatric team and ask for a recommendation on a PCP that supports WLS.

Even though you don't know for sure what he was going to say, you know he should have talked to you long before now. I had the same situation with my old PCP. In fact she let me go 3 years before saying anything about my rapidly deteriorating kidneys. When she finally did, the damage was done and I had no idea it was even a problem. She recommended I see a nephrologist and he is the one who showed me all the results and how long it was going on for. He is also the one who suggested WLS to stop the disease in its tracks.

I never trusted her again and actually called her out on it as well as asking why my nephrologist was the one who had to recommend WLS. She admitted she was not good at having those conversations because she herself is obese.

Of course I thought "what the heck, then don't be a PCP" - I immediately went on the hunt for a new PCP. Now I have a great one.

Change as soon as you can.

I think I would have gone on the hunt for a lawyer, too!

Every one makes good points but I wanted to add that I've been a nurse case manager for many years. Pretty much everyone I manage is medical high risk and if I were being perfectly honest over all compliance with treatment is low.

I do care about the people in my care, they aren't just cases to me. But I pick my battles and the thought, "I don't care to engage you about (your weight, drinking, smoking, std, diabetes) because you have more pressing issues and I am not up for dealing with it right now" crosses my mind more than I'd like.

Maybe he was going to say "I don't care how you do it but you are going to die if you don't do something!!"

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
