Make my self throw up?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone make there self throw up? When I eat something that doesn't go down right or having a bad reaction to it , I just make myself throw up. Hate to do it but have no choice. I'm 9 weeks post op and feel more restriction now than in the beginning.

Hi there! I've unfortunately done that more often than I'd like to admit. It know it's not good but if it help relieve the discomfort it's worth it. For me, still even at over a year out, the difference is a bite or two. I still need to tell myself to stop eating before I get to that point of discomfort. The frequency definitely decreases over time though...

I've done it twice. It's totally last resort, not recommended, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I know someone who had food "stuck" and they were told to take a quick swig of soda and the carbonation will bring it back up. Apparently it worked but, again, not highly recommended on several levels. Use at your own risk.

I do this frequently. I know it's not recommended but it helps relieve my discomfort if food is not sitting well. If I don't induce vomiting, I'm miserable.

I hate to admit it, but I do also. I just did last night and all that kept going through my head is what if I become anorexic, which I know is extreme and I never would but I could not help but think it. I am a year and two months post op and have probably thrown up a dozen times since surgery. The first 6-8 times, I would just wait it out and be miserable for an hour, then once I learned the signs, I started sticking my finger down my throat to avoid being miserable for an hour. I figure I might as well get it over with because it's going to happen anyway.
Last night I had a late dinner (around 8:30pm) and then out of habit got a cup of popcorn less than a half hour later (because that is what I eat most nights after my shower). After about three bites, it dawned on me that I just ate dinner less than a half hour ago....at that point my belly was very uncomfortable, so made myself throw it up.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
