Pre-Op diet and exercise

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I'm new to this board, but since my surgery is approaching on August 29th, I wanted to reach out to others going through the same things.

I'm on the pre-op liquid diet of three shakes a day and while it's not fun, I've been sticking to the program and I've dropped about 10 pounds since Sunday.

My question is did any of you or are any of you working out in the two weeks prior to surgery? My doctor said that it was fine this week as long as I felt up to it and the first two days I was good...but I'm wondering how others did with this. I just know that after the surgery it will be awhile for anything beyond walking and I want to keep my muscle build-up for as long as possible.

Hello, I had the same liquid diet although only one week long. I walked a lot 3 weeks before surgery (6-7 miles a day). I'm one day post op, don't have any pain except for some gas discomfort so I must've done something that minimised the pain. My advice would be- stick to your diet, do some cardio and respiratory exercises (they are really helpful). :)

Hi! My surgery is on the 30th, super close to yours! I started the liquid diet a week ago and I meet with my trainer 3 times a week. The first time we met I was fine, but since I've been on the diet longer now I have noticed how exhausted I get if I don't immediately put some Protein back into me. I'd say as long as you follow up your workout with either a shake or something else Protein filled, you'd be good! My surgeon told me it was great to be working out but the second I feel nauseous or dizzy to stop. Good luck on your surgery!

I tried to continue my workouts through my pre-op diet, but had to give up. My pre-op totaled up to about 450 calories a day and it was exhausting just trying to make it through the day at work. I think I only managed actual exercise the first 4 days or so before I had to quite. It got to the point where I was so weak it was hard to just wash my hair in the morning!

I am only a few days in to pre-op, everything is going fine, my walks I do are making more tired of normal. I'm sure it is because I don't even enough calories. But I try to keep going

Thanks for all the advice and information! I figure I'll keep with working out as long as I feel up to it. As I told a co-worker today, I also like it because it occupies my time and keeps me from wanting more food.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
