Graduation-to Mushies

Recommended Posts

Hey Lifesavers, (That is truly what you guys have been for me during the past week):banana

I went for my first post op appointment today. I lost about 10 pounds thus far. I was both shocked and estatic when the doctor told me that I could move on to the MUSHIE phase. :Bunny I thought I was supposed to be on full liquids for two weeks. Anyway while I was in the waiting room I was reading on the articles on the wall about a patient who had been banded and it said that when she went for her 1 week checkout, Dr. Abkin told her she could advance to mushies. Maybe the books that I got from the nutrionist are outdated. I don't know but everything I read said I couldn't advance until 2 weeks, but I asked the Doc again was he sure and he said "yes". So I came home and my mom made me what taste like the best homemade mashed potatoes I ever had. I couldn't eat very many of them, but I was able to eat some. I do find that after a while I'm hungry again. Is that normal?

Any good ol' fashion suggestions for the mushy phase?????:D

Hello,

If you research the archives you will find that most everyone experiences hunger at this stage. I found the mushies and the solids (once I got there) really helped alleviate that initial hunger. In fact I was starving during the liquid stage but didn't end up needing a fill till 6 months. That is kind of unusual but I followed the criterias for determining the need for a fill. I think Kelly and Michelle covered all the yummy mushies... Teresa

I had lots of mashed potatoes and yummy Soups during my mushie stage. I was even able to go out to eat and ordered Soup and a baked potato. I can't even begin to describe how good it tasted!! I also was allowed to go to mushies on the 2nd week. Good luck to you!!!

These are some great ideas, thank you!! I especially didn't think of hummus. I love hummus! Do you think guacamole would be ok, along the lines of avocados? Or is it too fatty? :D

Newbandster, check the food forum subheading under Main LapBand Forums; there are good suggestions there for mushy food. I started an "ethnic mushy" thread a while back, and lots of people posted good suggestions. Congratulations to you!

Beautiful picture, it's always nice to put a face to who you are talking to.

Thanks Betty. I think you're talking to me because I think I'm the only one who just put my picture up and if not, I'm so embarrassed and I hope you don't think I'm vain for responding!

I've been looking at everyone's picture here and I think we're a group of some pretty nice looking big girls who are going to knock everyone's socks off after having these bands on for awhile!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
