Taking pills right after surgery

Recommended Posts

I had to take my thyroid med and the gastric acid reducer on my first day post op.

Both were small pills, and I did not have any issues with them, just on liquids, or further down the track.

I also asked for Codeine Phosphate for pain, these were lot larger tablets, and had to be crushed by the nurse. I had no problems with those either.

I crushed or chewed mine up the first couple weeks.

My surgeon has no problem with patients swallowing pills as long as they are small enough to fit through a standard size wedding ring. I was swallowing pills within a couple hours of waking up from surgery, no problem.

Larger meds required either a substitute prescription for a liquid version, or consulting with a pharmacist to figure out an alternate form of consumption (not all pills can be crushed or chewed).

Check with your surgeon though, he told me not to start back on my BP meds. He was worried about dehydration.

They sell pill cutters. You can cut big ones in half then in fourths. You just take them all slow and should be fine.

my surgeon is fine with small pills from day 1, we can cut them if needed. She says some of her patients have problems with nausea with crushing.

I was told not to swallow anything bigger than the tip of a pencil eraser. Crushed what could be crushed and put it in my Protein shakes. Opened capsules and swallowed those with fluids. Any extended release stuff cannot be crushed so make sure to check with a local Pharmacist to be sure which meds can be cut/crushed safely. I had to get a sub for two of my pills until I could swallow them whole again. Good Luck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
