drain site infection & NASTY antibiotics!

Recommended Posts

I just was given antibiotics for an infection at the site where my drainage tube was in the hospital. Aside from packing my own incision a couple of times a day, I have to take antibiotics 4 times per day. They taste disgusting since I actually have to open the capsule and mix the powder with Water (powder meds for 3 months!). I've tried to mask the taste with water additive Mio, natural cranberry juice (i thought that would for sure mask it since its so tart, but noooooooooooooo), with food, etc. I've gotten nowhere. Nothing will mask the horrible taste. All the doc tells me is to do what I've already tried. It's so bad it makes me want to be sick. Anyone have to have antibiotics and overcome this issue? If so, how?

After surgery, I found that I could no longer swallow medium to large pills, so I had to crush or split them. My Calcium supplements were the worse. In powder form they tasted like chalk and didn't dissolve in Water. I mixed them with a glass of Crystal Light and that was the only way I could drink them.

I am not sure that taking apart capsules is the best idea. The capsules are part of the delivery system. They are to ensure that the contents travel properly down through your stomach acids. Perhaps they can provide these antibiotics in another form.

Also after your treatment of antibiotics make sure that you take Probiotics for a couple weeks. Antibiotics destroy bacteria in your body - both bad and good (beneficial). Therefore it is important to take Probiotics to reestablish colonies of good bacteria in your gut.

I was told by docs not to take any pills for 3 mos. Only to crush tablets and remove the capsule from the capsules. It's to prevent medication ulceration during recovery.

I'm aware of the Probiotics. So you use crystal light? Not sure if I can have crystal light. I'm allergic to aspartame. I'll have to check. Not much different from Mio though. Looks like I may not be able to get around this.

Recently I started to use a product called Bai. I buy it by the case at Sam's Club. They have a lot of good flavors.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
