No longer stalled. But eating food is VERY challenging.

First of all, YAY for no longer being stalled! :)

But, eating soft food is extremely challenging. I ate ramen noodles last night, and I tried extremely hard to eat slowly and in small bites. After just 5 bites, I no longer wanted it. It also felt as if my food got stuck in my sternum and I could barely swallow my own spit. I was drooling profusely over the sink. Today, I tried eating noodles again. Same thing happened. I actually had to try and make myself throw up because the pain was so bad. I only ate about 2 ounces of noodles and that alone was challenging. I would only take half-teaspoon bites, so I know I'm not taking large bites. I had a hiatal hernia (the size of a golf ball) repaired during surgery. I never had problems with it before. But now, I feel as if I actually have one.

Has anyone experienced this? Should I go get an endoscopy?

I am surprised that you are eating noodles, this early post op. The post op emphasis is on good quality Proteins, and not carbs that can bloat you up and make you feel sick.

Your body is clearly showing that it can't handle noodles. Got to listen to your body, as it will react to foods it can't tolerate or digest.

How about soft, poached salmon with cheese sauce, Chobani yoghurt with Protein powder, a soft boiled egg, chicken mince with cheese sauce, cream cheese, soft veggies like zucchinis in small amounts.

I used to stew apples to add into my yoghurt.

There are many good Proteins to have, instead of carbs that not only will stall your weight-loss, but make you ill as well.

Good luck, I hope you can start eating soft/moist proteins and feel much better!

Agree with the above. Protein, protein, protein. I'm only 10 days post op but can't imagine eating noodles for quite a while.

You're right. I was eating noodles because it's the softest thing in my house, lol. I still live with my mom and she eats a lot of chips and such. So, I figured noodles would be ok. I won't be eating them anymore, at least not for a while. Thanks for the advice. I will definitely eat that. I love cheese! :)

My body can't handle certain carbs 5 months post. As I hate feeling ill, if I have a bad reaction to a certain food, I know I have to avoid it.

I forgot to add that Refried Beans are another source of Proteins, but not everyone can eat it.

I love the taste, but it gives me wind afterwards .....

Great that you'll stay away from noodles, and definitely no chips. Great that you like cheese!

Just healthy Proteins, and you will be amazed how much better you will feel, and the weight-loss will be better too :)

I would ask a doctor about the endoscopy, not us average humans! I always keep eggs on hand so when you need something soft, and you don't have food, you have eggs. Also keep Protein shakes on hand. Lifesavers!!

@@Hiraeth You need to shop for appropriate post-op foods and have them available at all times. Noodles are not usually allowed on plans (as @ indicated) for months (if ever). There's alot you can be eating - cottage cheese, greek yogurt, sugar free pudding (add Protein powder), hummus, ricotta bake, refried Beans with cheese, pureed chili, etc. You can also supplement with Protein Shakes if needed to meet protein goals. No Pasta, bread or rice. I don't think there's any need for an endoscopy unless you're having difficulties with appropriate foods or fluids. Time to shop!

@@Hiraeth It is very possible you may have eaten them too fast. I too have to remember this when I am eating. Although we can only eat a small amount, it is still very important that you eat it over 30 minutes. When I am having meals for example lunch (cause I drink my breakfast) I take 2 bites, put it down, come back to it like 5 minutes later, have 2 more bites, back to my book or computer or whatever for 5-10 min and take 2 more bites. if I feel satisfied usually I'll just put it away and finish later as a snack. Since I need that Protein, I'll just keep working on it 2 bites at a time every 5-10 minutes until its gone (usually about 2 oz of meat). The rest of the meal (typically a veggie) will get put away for a snack an hour or so later.

Also carbs tend to expand and fill you up quickly. Many members say they were advised no carbs (bread, Pasta, potatoes) for at least 6 months during the peak of your weight loss. Not the case for me (but prob not a bad idea) however, I was advised by my NUT to limit my intake. So I may incorporate a carb during my meal or snack twice a week particularly on days when I plan to be active and usually with a Protein. For example I had roasted sweet potatoes cut into 1/4 inch cubes. I may have 6 small cubes with lunch or dinner but only after I've eaten my protein.

SInce I still cant eat both... I usually end up eating it later as a snack. Even then, I will eat those 6 little cubes over 20-30 min. Or else I'm all nauseous and watering at the mouth and just turned off from food period. Be patient. It's an adjustment. I'm sure 10 months out or 2 years out it will be much better.

I am allowed healthy carbs (fruit, veggies / produce) - so sweet potatoes would be allowed (just need to eat protein first). Pasta is a different story all together - as is bread and rice because they expand - and there is little to no nutritional value.

I am concerned that you don't seem to be prepared for post-op nutrition and that your home environment may not be a very healthy place.

Why not make an appointment with your NUT and/or see if you can come up with some strategies for making sure you have the nutrition you need and that you have the tools you need to succeed.

Can you talk with your mom about providing you with a cabinet or shelf in the kitchen and refrigerator that is yours, so you can have the foods you need on hand?

Your NUT and/or your post-op food plan would be a good guide for a shopping list.

Well, I bought a ton of liquid stuff before the surgery. But my hospital pulled a fast one on me and told me that my stay would only cost $150. I only get paid $640 every 2 weeks. Well, when I arrived at the hospital, I found out it was actually going to cost me $350. I had no choice but to give it to them. That left me with only $70 because the rest went to bills. So I bought nothing but liquid to last me for a week. Protein Drinks are not very cheap (they are about $8.00 for a pack of 4). I bought 3 packs which cost me about $25 plus tax). The rest went to broth and medication. I now only have $7.56 in my account and I don't get paid until tomorrow. So, it was impossible for me to buy anything else. Once I get paid, I am going to buy Soup and eggs and more protein drinks.< /p>

I was not told I couldn't have soft noodles. But, now I know! It makes perfect sense. I was told no rice or bread. I guess they assumed I knew better, lol! Thanks for the response! <3

I thought I was prepared since my hospital told me it would only cost me $150 for the stay. That would have left me with $270 for groceries. Well, since they told me wrong, I ended up paying $350 for my hospital stay. I was pretty irked because all I had was a week's worth of Protein drinks, Soup, and Water. Now I'm on my last Protein shake and I don't get paid until tomorrow. :/

@@Hiraeth That sucks! I know it's difficult living paycheck to paycheck. Do you have a costco or BJs wholesale club near you? They have good prices on Premier Protein drinks. Grab some refried Beans, canned tuna, cheese, eggs, etc. Buy a chicken to boil to make your own broth (has more protein) and then purer the chicken meat and make some different meals with that. Good luck.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
