TWW200 30 Posted August 17, 2016 (edited) I am new to the forum but have been doing research (more like listening watching and trying to learn) from other people on this site and another sites ... I do have a question, might be a silly one however. Okay - I have read the "horror" stories and a lot of them are because of lack of hydration. Now I am a HUGE Water lover so I am not sure how this could happen. Is it just because your tummy doesn't like it or because you are throwing up too much? I am going in for my consultation to have the sleeve done on Sept 9th Can't wait! smg 471 Posted August 17, 2016 First off, welcome to the forum @@TWW200 ! Not sure what procedure(s) you are considering, but I can only speak to the Gastric Sleeve (VSG). When you have the procedure done, there are possibilities that your "tastes" can change. You may not like things you liked before the surgery, and vice versa. For instance, since my procedure I am very sensitive to foods that are overly salty and also drinks that are overly sweet, even though before surgery, those same foods or drinks didn't bother me. Sometimes, for whatever reason, some tend to have difficulty with Water after the surgery. I did not. I loved Water before the procedure and love it just as much after. I do find it interesting that before the surgery I would drink purified bottled water at room temp, but now after the surgery, I prefer spring water or enhanced water (smart water) cold. But still love it just as much as I did before the procedure. Everyone is different and for some, none of their tastes may change. The other thing to keep in mind that drinking after surgery (especially immediately pre-op) can be difficult if you were used to "guzzling" large amounts of liquid. You certainly won't be able to do that for some time, if at all, and it can be painful to try. It can also be painful if you take in a large amount of air while drinking, which is why straws are not recommended immediately post-op. For most, constant sipping throughout the day will allow them to get all of their hydration needs and more. Most complications people have are related to dehydration and it's the #1 reason bariatric patients end up back in the hospital. It takes some dedication to hit those goals early on, but it does get easier. At least it did for me. Best of luck on your journey!
TWW200 30 Posted August 17, 2016 Thank you sooo much! That does make sense. I am looking into the sleeve as well. Fingers crossed! Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App
Sara Crowley 10 Posted August 17, 2016 Before my surgery, all I would drink was coffee and Water. After surgery, my Water has to be flavored in order for me to drink it, which is really disappointing for me cause a lot of stuff is too sweet, even crystal light. Water for whatever reason feels like it gets stuck in my tubes going down to my stomach no matter how small the sip. I am hoping that as time passes this will ease (I had surgery 8/2). My taste buds have changed drastically after the surgery and still changing. I just hope that they changed and decided not to like the sweets that I used to like before lol. But everyone is different. My mother had the surgery also and the only thing that changed for her was the shakes (she hates them now and they make her nauseous). Regardless if something changes, you will find out what works for you. Congrats on the upcoming surgery !
Josey Quinn 187 Posted August 17, 2016 I was sleeved in December 2015. The biggest challenge with hydration for me to this day is not being able to drink with my meals. I get busy at work and forget to drink between meals. I eat four small meals a day, so I feel like I turn around, and it's time to eat again. I have to keep liquids with me all the time and consciously force myself to drink.
azsoul 24 Posted August 18, 2016 I had my sleeve about 3 months ago. I just had some blood work done and they said I was dehydrated. I still like Water but I used to drink more Water faster. Now I can't gulp the water or take more than 2 swallows at a time. I am drinking significantly less because it just takes longer.
